Satluj – Community Screening Draws Crowds in Jammu After OTT Removal
Satluj – A large gathering attended a special community screening of the film Satluj at Gurdwara Shri Guru Nanak Dev Ji in Nanak Nagar, Jammu, on Friday evening. The event took place shortly after the film was removed from the OTT platform ZEE5 within two days of its release following directions issued by the government. The screening brought together people from different backgrounds, reflecting the growing public interest surrounding the film and the discussions linked to its withdrawal.

Community Event Sees Wide Participation
The programme was organised by the District Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (DGPC), Jammu, which invited members of the public to watch the film together. According to committee representatives, the event witnessed participation from people belonging to different religious communities, including Sikhs, Hindus, Muslims, and others. Organisers described the turnout as a sign of the public’s curiosity and willingness to engage with the film.
DGPC Treasurer Sardar Jagpal Singh said the response exceeded expectations, adding that similar screenings have been planned at other Gurdwaras over the coming days. He stated that the committee intends to continue these public viewings until July 16.
Film’s Removal Sparks Public Discussion
Satluj has attracted significant attention after it was taken off ZEE5 less than 48 hours after becoming available to viewers. The development prompted reactions from members of the film industry as well as political figures, with many expressing interest in the circumstances surrounding the decision.
The removal has also led to broader conversations about film certification, digital releases, and the regulatory framework governing online streaming platforms in India.
Government Explains Reason Behind Action
Officials from the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting said the film had not secured the certification required for theatrical exhibition before its release. According to ministry officials, the producers changed the title of the project and released it directly on an OTT platform instead of completing the prescribed certification process.
The ministry further stated that the release was considered inconsistent with provisions of the Information Technology (Intermediary Guidelines and Digital Media Ethics Code) Rules, 2021. Authorities have maintained that compliance with the applicable legal framework is mandatory for content distributed through digital platforms.
Story Based on Jaswant Singh Khalra
The film is inspired by the life of Jaswant Singh Khalra, a human rights activist known for raising concerns over alleged illegal killings and secret cremations during the period of militancy and counter-insurgency operations in Punjab during the late 1980s and early 1990s. His work brought national and international attention to the issue.
Khalra disappeared in 1995 under circumstances that later became the subject of criminal investigations and court proceedings. His body was subsequently recovered near the Harike Bridge on the Sutlej River. Allegations surrounding his abduction and killing involved former Punjab Police personnel, making his case one of the most widely discussed human rights matters in the state’s history.
Cast and Production Details
Directed by Honey Trehan, Satluj has been produced by RSVP and MacGuffin Pictures. The film features Diljit Dosanjh in the lead role alongside Arjun Rampal, Kanwaljit Singh, Suvinder Vicky, and Geetika Vidya Ohlyan. Since its release and subsequent removal, the film has remained at the centre of public attention, with discussions continuing over regulatory procedures, artistic expression, and audience access.
