T20I – India Face Record Defeat as England Take Series Control
T20I – India captain Shreyas Iyer criticised his side’s performance after England secured a commanding 125-run victory in the third T20I, handing the visitors their biggest defeat by runs in men’s T20 international cricket.
England’s win at the venue gave them a 2-0 lead in the five-match series after the opening match was abandoned because of rain. India, the reigning T20 World Cup champions, were beaten by more than 100 runs in a men’s T20I for the first time.
Iyer Calls Performance Unacceptable
Speaking after the match, Iyer said the scale of the defeat reflected a poor display in every department. He said the team would need to review its mistakes carefully before the remaining fixtures.
“It was a very poor performance,” Iyer said. “A defeat by such a large margin is not acceptable. We have to accept what happened, assess the areas where we went wrong and work on them.”
The captain also questioned whether the surface was suitable for a total above 200. However, he acknowledged that India’s early batting collapse prevented the side from building any momentum during the chase.
England Build Strong Total After Batting First
England were asked to bat first and finished with 201 for seven from their 20 overs. Opener Phil Salt led the innings with a brisk 70 from 44 deliveries, giving the hosts a solid platform at the top of the order.
Salt attacked India’s bowlers during the early stages before England continued to score at a steady rate through the middle overs. Sam Curran added late momentum with an unbeaten 41 from 24 balls, helping the hosts move beyond the 200-run mark.
India struggled to contain England’s scoring in the final phase of the innings. Iyer said his bowlers did not adapt quickly enough to the conditions, particularly on a pitch where hard lengths appeared to trouble batters.
Pace Attack Leaves India Reeling
India’s reply fell apart almost immediately as England’s pace bowlers maintained pressure with disciplined lines and lengths. Chasing 202, India lost four wickets in the powerplay and never recovered from the early damage.
The visitors were dismissed for 76 in 11.4 overs, leaving England with a 125-run win. The result became one of India’s heaviest losses in T20I cricket and underlined the gap between the two teams on the day.
Iyer said India’s batters failed to approach the chase with enough clarity. He noted that a target of more than 200 required a structured plan, especially after early wickets had placed the team under pressure.
India Seek Response in Remaining Matches
With two matches still to be played, England cannot lose the series because of their 2-0 advantage and the rain-affected opening game. India now need strong performances in the remaining contests to avoid further setbacks.
Iyer urged players to take greater individual responsibility and contribute more consistently in match-defining moments. He said the team would focus on learning from the defeat rather than allowing the result to affect its confidence.
The captain added that India must improve its execution with both bat and ball if it is to compete effectively in the final two matches. The visitors will look to produce a more composed performance when the series resumes.
