Indonesia’s Highest Civilian Distinction

The Bintang Adipurna, commonly described as Indonesia’s Medal of Honour, is awarded to individuals whose contributions are considered significant to the country’s unity, continuity and prosperity. The honour is among Indonesia’s most prestigious civilian decorations and reflects the importance attached to relations between New Delhi and Jakarta.

With the award, Modi has received international recognition from countries in Asia, Europe, Africa and the Americas. The honours have been given for a range of contributions, including diplomatic engagement, strategic partnerships, sustainable development and efforts to strengthen cooperation between India and other nations.

Recognition Across Several Regions

The latest honour follows a series of awards presented to the Prime Minister by foreign governments in recent years. These distinctions have often been announced during bilateral visits, state engagements or major diplomatic meetings, highlighting India’s expanding role in regional and global affairs.

Several of the awards have deep historical significance and are regarded as the highest civilian or state decorations in their respective countries. Officials have described them as acknowledgements of India’s growing international engagement and Modi’s role in advancing ties with partner nations.

Seychelles Award Focused on Environmental Leadership

Last month, Seychelles conferred its highest distinction, Guardian of the Blue Horizon, on Prime Minister Modi. The award recognised leadership linked to environmental conservation, sustainable development and efforts to promote responsible growth.

After receiving the honour, Modi dedicated it to countries working collectively to confront climate change and protect the environment for future generations. The recognition also reflected India’s repeated emphasis on balancing economic development with environmental responsibility.

India has continued to raise issues related to climate action, renewable energy, ocean protection and sustainable development in international forums. The Seychelles award was seen as an acknowledgement of that broader policy focus.

Major State Honours Received Earlier

Among the prominent decorations received by Modi is Bhutan’s Order of the Druk Gyalpo, the country’s highest civilian honour. It was presented by the King of Bhutan, making Modi the first foreign head of government to receive the award.

Nigeria also honoured him with the Grand Commander of the Order of the Niger. Modi became only the second foreign dignitary to receive the distinction after Queen Elizabeth II.

During a visit to Israel earlier this year, he was presented with the Medal of the Knesset. The recognition made him the first recipient of the honour, marking another notable moment in India-Israel relations.

Egypt awarded Modi the Order of the Nile, its highest state decoration, which was presented by President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi. The honour recognised the expanding strategic and diplomatic partnership between India and Egypt.

Awards Reflect Strategic Partnerships

The United States awarded Modi the Legion of Merit during the presidency of Donald Trump. The decoration was presented in recognition of his role in strengthening the India-US strategic partnership.

Russia honoured him with the Order of St Andrew the Apostle, the country’s highest state decoration. The award acknowledged his contribution to deepening long-standing cooperation between India and Russia.

Several of these awards have previously been received by prominent global figures, including Barack Obama, Nelson Mandela, Queen Elizabeth II, Xi Jinping and Winston Churchill.

The Bintang Adipurna adds to Modi’s record as the Indian Prime Minister with the largest number of international honours. The awards span state decorations, environmental recognition and other global acknowledgments, reflecting India’s diplomatic relationships across multiple regions.
