Shopian – Security Forces Expand Search for Two Suspected LeT Operatives

Shopian –  Security forces continued a large-scale search operation in the Chanapora area of Shopian district on Sunday after two suspected Lashkar-e-Taiba operatives were reportedly seen moving through a densely covered orchard.

Shopian security forces search let operatives

The operation began on Saturday after surveillance footage allegedly showed the movement of two local men, identified by officials as Latif and Zakir. A joint team comprising Jammu and Kashmir Police, the Central Reserve Police Force and the Army was deployed to search the surrounding area.

Search operation continues in Chanapora

Kashmir Inspector General of Police V K Birdi said the anti-terror operation in Shopian was still under way. Security personnel have maintained a cordon around parts of Chanapora while teams continue to examine orchard belts and nearby routes.

Officials said the terrain has made the search challenging, with thick vegetation providing several possible hiding spots. Additional forces were sent to the area after an initial exchange of fire was reported on Saturday.

Brief firing reported during initial phase

A security official said troops briefly exchanged gunfire with the suspected militants during the early stage of the operation. However, there was no confirmed contact after that incident.

Following the firing, the security presence was increased and access to the immediate area was tightened. Search teams have been using drones, sniffer dogs and other surveillance equipment to trace possible movement through the orchard and adjoining localities.

Authorities have not released details about any injuries or recoveries linked to the operation. The search was continuing when the latest reports were received.

Officials identify two local suspects

According to security officials, both men being searched for are residents of the region. Zakir is believed to have joined Lashkar-e-Taiba in 2024, while Latif reportedly became associated with the group last year.

Officials said efforts to identify and track local militant operatives remain important for disrupting support systems, movement routes and recruitment networks. Security agencies have increased monitoring in several parts of south Kashmir in recent months as part of wider counter-terror measures.

Shopian remains strategically important

Shopian district is considered a key route connecting south Kashmir with central Kashmir and areas near the Pir Panjal range in Jammu division. Its location has often made it significant for security operations involving suspected militant movement between different regions.

The latest operation is among the first major anti-terror actions reported in the Kashmir Valley during the ongoing Amarnath Yatra. The annual pilgrimage, which is scheduled to continue for 57 days, has led to heightened security arrangements across Kashmir, including on major roads, transit points and sensitive areas.

Security forces have not indicated how long the Shopian operation may continue. Officials said searches would remain focused on locating the two suspects and ensuring that nearby areas are secured.
