Mumbai – Maharashtra Announces Relief After Deadly Mankhurd Building Collapse
Mumbai – Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has announced financial assistance of Rs 5 lakh for the families of six people who died after a residential structure collapsed in Mumbai’s Mankhurd area amid heavy rain. Five of those killed were children. The Chief Minister expressed condolences to the bereaved families and described the incident as a deeply painful loss.

Collapse reported in Janta Nagar on Sunday night
The accident took place at about 8.30 pm on Sunday at Chawl No. 5 in Janta Nagar, located behind Hanuman Mandir in Mankhurd. The ground-plus-three-storey building came down following intense rainfall in the area, leaving several residents trapped beneath the rubble.
Police officers and emergency personnel were alerted soon after the collapse. Teams from the Mumbai Fire Brigade arrived at the location and began a rescue operation alongside local authorities. Seven people were pulled from the debris and taken to nearby hospitals for treatment.
Six victims declared dead after rescue operation
Five victims were taken to Shatabdi Hospital, where doctors declared them dead on arrival. Two others were admitted to Rajawadi Hospital. One of them later died during treatment, taking the death toll to six.
Officials said one person injured in the collapse remains under medical care and is in stable condition. The victims who died have been identified as Aliya, 7; Muskan, 14; Nihal, 6; Nabiya, 2; Munaf, 7; and Soni, 32.
Chief Minister offers condolences and compensation
In a statement, Fadnavis said the state government stood with the families affected by the tragedy. He paid tribute to those who died and extended support to relatives dealing with the aftermath of the collapse.
The Rs 5 lakh compensation announced by the Chief Minister will be provided to the families of each victim. Authorities have not yet released further details about the process for distributing the assistance.
Mayor says structure was unauthorised
Mumbai Mayor Ritu Tawde said the collapsed structure was illegal. She visited Shatabdi Hospital in Govandi on Sunday night, where she reviewed the situation and met relatives of the victims.
Maharashtra Samajwadi Party president Abu Azmi also visited the hospital and spoke with family members. The incident has renewed concern over unsafe and unauthorised buildings in densely populated parts of Mumbai, particularly during the monsoon season.
Heavy rainfall recorded across Mumbai
The collapse occurred as Mumbai received significant rainfall over the previous 24 hours. According to India Meteorological Department data recorded until 8.30 am on Monday, the Colaba observatory received 128 mm of rain, while the Santacruz observatory reported 159.2 mm.
Heavy monsoon rain can weaken old or poorly maintained structures, especially in low-lying and crowded neighbourhoods. Civic authorities and emergency teams remain on alert as rainfall continues in several parts of the city.
