America 250 – Trump Hails US Legacy During Mount Rushmore Address
America 250 – US President Donald Trump praised the country’s political system, national history and global influence during an Independence Eve address at Mount Rushmore in South Dakota, as the United States prepared to mark 250 years since the adoption of the Declaration of Independence.

Speaking before the granite memorial featuring former presidents George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Theodore Roosevelt and Abraham Lincoln, Trump described the anniversary as a significant moment in the country’s history. He said the United States had built a record of liberty, self-rule and economic growth that he considered unmatched by any other nation.
Address focuses on 250 years of American history
Trump used the speech to reflect on the development of the United States since 1776. He called the country the world’s oldest republic and said its Constitution had provided a durable foundation for democratic governance over the past two and a half centuries.
The president said the nation’s continued existence and influence were rooted in principles including liberty, justice, equality, self-government and prosperity. He also referred to the Constitution as a lasting framework that had helped guide the country through periods of change, conflict and expansion.
Trump told the audience that the American experience stood apart from much of recorded history, which he said had often been shaped by poverty, violence, exploitation and hardship. In contrast, he portrayed the United States as a country built around opportunity and the belief that individuals can advance through ability and effort.
Trump contrasts American experience with global history
During his remarks, Trump argued that the creation of the United States should not be viewed as an ordinary historical development. He described the country’s system of government and individual freedoms as unusual in the broader context of human civilisation.
He said America’s story had been defined by exploration, liberation and ambition, adding that generations of citizens had pushed beyond earlier limits through skill, determination and talent. Trump also said the country’s political structure had enabled people from different backgrounds to participate in a shared national project.
The president repeatedly stressed the idea of citizens governing themselves. He said the strength of the country came from people joining together while maintaining the freedoms and rights guaranteed under the Constitution.
Freedom 250 events mark Independence anniversary
The Mount Rushmore speech was a central part of the Freedom 250 celebrations linked to the July 4 anniversary. The commemorations are being held to recognise 250 years since the Declaration of Independence was adopted in 1776.
Earlier on Friday, Trump issued a proclamation declaring July 4, 2026, the 250th anniversary of the adoption of the Declaration of Independence. In the proclamation, he urged Americans to observe the occasion with ceremonies recognising the country’s history, heritage and achievements.
The president also signed pardons for six people who had been prosecuted during the administration of former President Joe Biden before travelling to South Dakota for the evening event.
President calls anniversary a moment of national reflection
Trump said the anniversary offered an opportunity for Americans to consider the country’s past and its future. He described the United States as a powerful example of a nation built on representative government and constitutional principles.
The president’s remarks focused on national unity, individual achievement and the role of democratic institutions in the country’s development. As Independence Day celebrations began across the United States, he called on citizens to recognise what he described as the lasting significance of the American experiment.
