Proclamation recalls the nation’s founding document

The presidential proclamation, released ahead of Independence Day, presents the Declaration of Independence as a defining statement of liberty that has continued to shape the country for 250 years. Trump said the anniversary offered Americans an opportunity to reflect on the ideals established during the nation’s founding.

In the proclamation, the President said the country should carry forward the spirit of the founders while working to strengthen the United States in the years ahead. He referred to the nation as “one American People” and linked the anniversary to the principles first declared in Philadelphia in 1776.

Declaration’s adoption and revolutionary struggle highlighted

Trump’s proclamation revisits the events that led to the Declaration’s adoption by the Continental Congress in July 1776. The document was drafted primarily by Thomas Jefferson after Richard Henry Lee of Virginia introduced a resolution calling for the American colonies to separate from British rule.

The President also cited the Declaration’s statement that all people are created equal and possess unalienable rights, including life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. The language remains among the most widely recognised passages in American political history.

The proclamation further recounts major episodes from the American Revolution, including the battles of Lexington and Concord and Bunker Hill. It also refers to George Washington’s crossing of the Delaware River, the difficult winter at Valley Forge and the American victory at Yorktown.

According to the proclamation, these moments helped secure independence and established a national character defined by courage, perseverance, faith and self-determination.

Major chapters of American history included

Looking beyond the Revolutionary era, Trump pointed to several developments that shaped the modern United States. These included the preservation of the Union during the Civil War, the abolition of slavery, industrial growth, victories in the First and Second World Wars, the Apollo Moon landing and advances in technology.

The President said American innovation had influenced communities around the world through inventions such as the telephone, personal computer and internet. He also praised scientific and medical progress as part of the country’s wider development over the past two-and-a-half centuries.

Administration outlines future priorities

The proclamation also sets out Trump’s vision for the country’s future. He said the administration would continue efforts related to national sovereignty, territorial integrity, liberty and the protection of American history and culture.

Trump highlighted future work in space exploration, artificial intelligence, quantum research and energy development. He said the United States would continue its efforts to return Americans to the Moon and pursue longer-term ambitions involving missions to Mars.

The President formally designated July 4, 2026, as the “250th Anniversary of the Adoption of the Declaration of Independence” and encouraged citizens to mark the occasion with appropriate ceremonies.

Nationwide America250 programme continues

The anniversary is being observed through the broader America250 initiative, a congressionally established programme created to commemorate 250 years since the country’s founding. The initiative includes participation from federal agencies, state governments, local communities and cultural organisations.

Events planned during the anniversary year include public ceremonies, museum exhibitions, educational activities and local programmes focused on the history of the United States and the legacy of the Declaration of Independence.
