India-Argentina – Strategic Partnership Gains Momentum Through Trade and Development
India-Argentina – Argentina’s Ambassador to India, Mariano Caucino, has said that India’s efforts to build a developed economy by 2047 are opening new avenues for international partnerships. Addressing a diplomatic and business gathering in New Delhi, he said India’s policy of economic diversification and wider global engagement is drawing growing attention from countries across the world.

India’s Growing Role in the Indo-Pacific
Caucino spoke at the India-Latin American and Caribbean Business and Diplomatic Conference held at the FIEO Auditorium. He said global diplomatic discussions are increasingly shaped by uncertainty and rapid change, but the rise of Asia and the Indo-Pacific has become a clear and lasting development.
According to the ambassador, India has emerged as one of the most influential countries in this changing environment. He noted that governments and businesses around the world are paying closer attention to India because of its large population, expanding economy and increasing role in international affairs.
He said India’s growing importance is visible not only in trade and investment discussions but also in broader conversations involving regional stability, supply chains and long-term economic cooperation.
Longstanding Diplomatic Ties
The ambassador also highlighted the history of diplomatic relations between India and Argentina. Argentina established its embassy in India in 1950, becoming one of the earliest Latin American nations to set up a diplomatic mission in the country.
The relationship was further strengthened in 2009 when Argentina opened its Consulate General in Mumbai, a major commercial and financial centre. In 2019, the two countries elevated their bilateral relationship to a Strategic Partnership, reflecting their intention to expand cooperation across several sectors.
Argentina also established an Agriculture Office in New Delhi, led by Agriculture Attaché Mariano Beheran. The office has supported closer engagement in agricultural trade and related areas of cooperation.
Support for India’s Development Ambitions
Caucino said Argentina and South America could play a more meaningful role in supporting India’s long-term development plans. He referred to the Indian government’s goal of becoming a developed economy by 2047 and said the country has taken major steps to open its economy and broaden its trade partnerships.
He added that stronger links between India and Latin America could benefit both sides by improving access to food products, minerals, technology and new markets. The ambassador said the distance between the two countries has not prevented them from building practical and mutually beneficial ties.
India has now become Argentina’s sixth-largest trading partner, underlining the steady expansion of bilateral commerce in recent years. Caucino said the two nations are likely to continue working together as their economic interests increasingly align.
Trade, Food Security and Critical Minerals
The ambassador pointed to Argentina’s role in supporting India’s food security needs. Argentina is currently one of India’s key suppliers of edible oils, including soybean oil and sunflower oil. It also exports legumes and hides to the Indian market.
Beyond agricultural products, critical minerals are becoming an important area of bilateral engagement. Lithium and copper, both essential for renewable energy systems, electric vehicles and advanced manufacturing, are expected to play a larger role in future India-Argentina trade.
Caucino also referred to India’s position among the world’s five largest economies and its status as the fastest-growing major economy. He said policymakers and diplomatic institutions in Argentina increasingly recognise India’s strategic importance and acknowledged Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s role in strengthening India’s international profile.
