Punjab Congress – Warring Retained as State Chief, Bajwa Continues as Opposition Leader
Punjab Congress – The Congress has ended weeks of uncertainty by retaining Amarinder Singh Raja Warring as the president of its Punjab unit and Partap Singh Bajwa as the Leader of the Opposition in the state Assembly. The decision keeps the party’s organisational and legislative leadership unchanged as it prepares for the 2027 Punjab Assembly elections.

Continuity in Punjab Congress leadership
By continuing with Warring and Bajwa, both prominent Jat Sikh leaders, the Congress leadership has chosen stability at a crucial stage. With the Assembly polls less than a year away, the party is looking to strengthen its ground network, improve coordination among senior leaders and build a broader election campaign structure.
The announcement was made by All India Congress Committee General Secretary KC Venugopal as part of a wider restructuring of the Punjab Congress. Along with the key leadership decisions, the party also named heads and members of several committees linked to campaign planning, election management and manifesto preparation.
Channi to lead campaign committee
Former Punjab Chief Minister and Jalandhar MP Charanjit Singh Channi has been appointed chairman of the campaign committee. The move gives the senior Scheduled Caste leader a major responsibility in shaping the Congress campaign and leading its outreach efforts across the state.
Channi had also been considered for the Punjab Congress chief’s post. His new role is expected to place him among the party’s leading faces during the run-up to the Assembly election, particularly in areas where the Congress hopes to strengthen its support among Scheduled Caste voters.
Singla given election coordination responsibility
Congress Working Committee member and former minister Vijay Inder Singla has been named chairman of the Election Management and Coordination Committee. A former MP, Singla will oversee key aspects of planning and coordination during the party’s election campaign.
His appointment is also being viewed as an effort by the Congress to maintain representation for Punjab’s Hindu community in its leadership structure. The party is seeking to expand its social outreach as rival Aam Aadmi Party has appointed Aman Arora as its Punjab president.
Randhawa and Amar receive key committee roles
Former Deputy Chief Minister and Gurdaspur MP Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa has been appointed in-charge of the party’s core committee. Randhawa, who is also the Rajasthan Congress in-charge, will play an important role in internal coordination and strategic discussions within the Punjab unit.
Fatehgarh Sahib MP Amar Singh has been named chairman of the manifesto committee. He will lead the process of preparing the party’s election document, which is expected to focus on public concerns, welfare commitments and Punjab-specific policy issues.
Three working presidents added to state unit
The Congress has also expanded its leadership team by appointing three working presidents under Warring. Former MLA Sukhwinder Danny and former cabinet minister Raj Kumar Verka, both Scheduled Caste leaders, have been given the posts along with Sangat Singh Gilzian, an Other Backward Classes leader.
The appointments are aimed at widening representation within the Punjab Congress and bringing more communities into the party’s organisational structure. The revised team combines senior leaders with regional and social representation as the party begins preparations for the next Assembly contest.
A senior Congress leader said the high command had attempted to create a balance between experience, seniority and wider representation while finalising the new structure.
