India-Japan – Modi and Takaichi Hold Talks on Technology and Economic Security
India-Japan – Strategic cooperation between India and Japan is expected to gain fresh momentum as Prime Minister Narendra Modi met Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi in New Delhi on Thursday for wide-ranging summit discussions.

The meeting focused on strengthening economic links, advancing technology partnerships and building more secure supply chains for vital sectors. Semiconductor production, critical technologies and broader economic security featured prominently in the talks between the two leaders.
Economic Security Takes Centre Stage
India and Japan are expected to announce a joint declaration on economic security cooperation following the summit. The two governments are also likely to issue a separate statement outlining their plans for collaboration in artificial intelligence.
The discussions come at a time when countries are seeking to reduce vulnerabilities in global supply networks, particularly for semiconductors and other strategic products. Both sides are looking at ways to create more dependable supply arrangements and expand cooperation in emerging technology fields.
External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said the summit was aimed at advancing a partnership based on trust, common values and strategic alignment. The Ministry of External Affairs has described the India-Japan relationship as one founded on mutual confidence and shared democratic principles.
Focus on Minerals and Pharmaceuticals
Critical minerals and pharmaceuticals were also expected to be part of the agenda. These sectors have become increasingly important for economic resilience, clean energy manufacturing and healthcare supply chains.
India and Japan are examining opportunities to deepen cooperation in areas that can support industrial growth and reduce dependence on limited sources of key materials. The two sides are also likely to explore stronger business and investment partnerships as part of their wider economic engagement.
Ceremonial Welcome in New Delhi
Takaichi arrived in India for a three-day official visit and received a ceremonial welcome at the forecourt of Rashtrapati Bhavan on Thursday morning. Her visit is being viewed as an important opportunity to review the progress of bilateral ties and set priorities for the coming years.
Soon after arriving in Delhi, the Japanese prime minister shared photographs of her visit on X. Modi welcomed her in a message on the platform, saying India was pleased to host her on her first visit to the country.
He said the two leaders would hold detailed discussions to further strengthen the India-Japan Special Strategic and Global Partnership. Modi also said the two countries would continue working together to support peace, stability and prosperity in the Indo-Pacific region and beyond.
Partnership Expands Across Key Sectors
India and Japan elevated their relationship to a Special Strategic and Global Partnership in 2014. Since then, cooperation has widened across trade, investment, defence, security, science, technology, culture and people-to-people exchanges.
The two countries are set to mark 75 years of diplomatic relations in 2027. Their bilateral framework now includes more than 70 dialogue mechanisms, reflecting the growing depth and range of engagement between New Delhi and Tokyo.
The annual summit remains the main platform for setting the strategic direction of the partnership. Modi travelled to Tokyo for the 15th India-Japan Annual Summit in August last year.
Regional and Global Issues on Agenda
The latest summit is also expected to include an exchange of views on regional developments and international matters of shared concern. The Ministry of External Affairs said the visit would allow both countries to assess the full scope of their cooperation and identify areas where it can be strengthened further.
Jaiswal said on Wednesday that Takaichi’s visit represented an important step in carrying forward the Special Strategic and Global Partnership between India and Japan
