WasteManagement – Andhra Pradesh Pushes Municipalities Towards Permanent Dumping-Yard-Free Urban Development
WasteManagement – The Andhra Pradesh government has stepped up its efforts to strengthen urban sanitation by introducing a comprehensive strategy aimed at making every municipality in the state free from dumping yards. Municipal Administration and Urban Development Minister P. Narayana on Tuesday instructed officials to ensure that solid waste generated every day is collected, transported, and scientifically processed without delay. The directions were issued during a high-level review meeting focused on improving waste management systems across Urban Local Bodies (ULBs).

Focus on Daily Waste Processing
Chairing the review, the minister stressed that municipalities should avoid the accumulation of garbage by ensuring same-day disposal of municipal solid waste. He said timely collection and scientific treatment are essential for maintaining cleaner cities and preventing long-term environmental challenges. Officials were directed to monitor daily operations closely and ensure waste management systems function efficiently across all urban regions.
Review of Ongoing Waste Management Projects
The progress of waste management activities was assessed through a video conference involving officials from the Swachha Andhra Corporation and municipal commissioners from different parts of the state. Managing Director Gandham Chandrudu attended the meeting from the State Secretariat, while Director Sampath Kumar and senior municipal officials participated virtually to present updates on ongoing projects and operational performance.
During the review, officials informed the minister that a substantial quantity of municipal waste collected from various cities is already being transported to the operational Waste-to-Energy facilities located in Visakhapatnam and Guntur. These plants are processing waste using scientific methods, helping reduce landfill dependency while supporting environmentally responsible waste disposal practices.
Faster Completion of New Processing Facilities
The minister also examined the progress of Fresh Waste Processing Plants currently under development across the state. He instructed officials to speed up construction work and ensure that the projects are completed within the planned schedule. According to the government, these facilities are expected to strengthen waste treatment capacity and improve the efficiency of municipal sanitation services.
P. Narayana also asked municipal commissioners to resolve pending land-related issues that could delay project implementation. In addition, he directed them to coordinate with electricity distribution agencies to secure dedicated power connections for the upcoming processing centres so that operations can begin without unnecessary interruptions.
Strengthening Urban Sanitation Infrastructure
Recognising the importance of efficient transportation in waste management, the minister instructed departments concerned to accelerate the procurement of garbage collection vehicles and specialised transport equipment. He noted that improving transportation capacity would help eliminate delays between waste collection points and processing facilities, making daily operations more effective.
Officials were also encouraged to strengthen coordination among various departments involved in sanitation and infrastructure development to ensure smooth implementation of the state’s waste management programme.
Long-Term Goal for Cleaner Cities
The state government aims to establish a sustainable urban waste management model that permanently addresses the issue of legacy waste accumulation. According to the minister, the long-term objective is to develop environmentally responsible infrastructure capable of supporting cleaner municipalities while reducing dependence on conventional dumping yards.
The initiative forms part of Andhra Pradesh’s broader urban development strategy, which focuses on improving sanitation standards, expanding scientific waste processing capacity, and creating healthier living environments for residents across the state’s municipalities.
