Gujarat – Civic Actions, Police Dispute and VIP Convoy Spark Fresh Public Debate

Gujarat –  Recent developments across Gujarat have drawn attention to civic accountability, law enforcement practices and administrative oversight.

Gujarat civic police vip row update

Two of Gujarat’s largest municipal corporations are facing growing public scrutiny following separate controversies linked to demolition drives and public expenditure. In Surat, questions have been raised over the demolition of more than 100 residential structures after officials offered conflicting statements about the operation. Meanwhile, Rajkot has come under criticism over a food bill worth Rs 27.20 lakh connected to a three-day demolition campaign, leading authorities to initiate a formal inquiry into the expenditure.

High Court Seeks Clarity on Surat Demolition

The demolition exercise in Surat has reached the Gujarat High Court, where the bench sought explanations from the police, the Surat Municipal Corporation and Torrent Power regarding their respective roles in the operation. The case gained attention after municipal authorities stated before the court that no official demolition order had been issued, despite the large-scale removal of homes.

The differing versions have raised concerns about procedural compliance and administrative responsibility. The court’s observations have intensified discussions on whether due process was followed and who authorised the action that affected more than 100 families. The matter is expected to remain under judicial examination as authorities submit their responses.

Rajkot Food Bill Under Official Investigation

A separate controversy has emerged in Rajkot after details of an unusually high food expenditure during a demolition drive became public. Records linked to the three-day operation showed a total catering expense of Rs 27.20 lakh, drawing widespread criticism over the use of public funds.

Among the listed expenses were kaju-katli sweets priced at Rs 231 per kilogram, tea and biscuits valued at approximately Rs 6.30 lakh, and restaurant-related bills amounting to Rs 20.68 lakh. The figures have triggered questions from citizens and public representatives regarding financial oversight. In response, officials have ordered an investigation to verify the expenditure and determine whether established financial procedures were followed.

Police Dispute Over Breakfast Request Escalates

An internal dispute within the police department in Vadodara has also attracted attention after allegations of workplace harassment surfaced. According to sources, the issue began when a police inspector allegedly instructed a constable on multiple occasions to bring breakfast.

The disagreement reportedly escalated when the constable declined a repeated request, stating that such tasks were outside his official responsibilities. Sources claimed the inspector then referred the matter to a senior officer, who allegedly warned the constable of a possible transfer.

The constable is said to have subsequently submitted a complaint in Gandhinagar against both the inspector and an officer of Superintendent of Police rank. The complaint has turned what began as a routine workplace disagreement into a significant departmental issue that may require administrative review.

VIP Convoy in Surat Faces Legal Action

In another incident, Surat Police initiated legal proceedings after a convoy organised to welcome a Member of the Legislative Assembly from Uttar Pradesh allegedly violated multiple traffic and security regulations.

Authorities said the procession involved more than ten luxury vehicles travelling from the Udhna-Magdalla Road area to Surat Airport without obtaining the necessary administrative or police permissions. The movement reportedly caused traffic disruptions along the route.

The matter gained further attention after videos circulating on social media appeared to show several vehicles using black window film, which is prohibited under existing regulations. Following the circulation of the footage, police identified and seized four vehicles believed to be central to the convoy. Officers also removed the illegal window tint at the location and initiated action against those involved for the alleged violations.

The three unrelated incidents have collectively placed governance, administrative accountability and adherence to official procedures under renewed public focus across Gujarat. Investigations and legal proceedings in each case are expected to determine whether rules were followed and whether further action is warranted.
