Photography – Filmmaker Kabir Khan has offered fans a rare look into a passion that exists beyond his work in cinema, revealing how photography has become an important creative outlet during his travels. Sharing memories from a recent visit to the United Kingdom, the director described how patience and careful observation helped him capture one of his most cherished photographs from the journey.
A Memorable Shot in Whitby
In a post shared on Instagram, Khan recounted the story behind an image taken near the famous lighthouse in Whitby, Yorkshire. According to the filmmaker, the dramatic weather had already created the perfect setting with dark rain clouds contrasting against the bright white railings and the coastal landmark. However, he believed the composition was incomplete without a seagull becoming part of the frame.
He explained that he waited nearly 45 minutes for the right moment, hoping a bird would settle in the exact position he had imagined before taking flight at just the right angle. The brief opportunity eventually arrived, allowing him to capture what he now considers his favourite photograph from the UK trip.
Photography Beyond Professional Life
Reflecting on the experience, Kabir Khan said photography continues to remind him why he first developed an interest in the art form. Unlike the fast-paced environment of film production, carrying a camera through unfamiliar streets allowed him to slow down and pay closer attention to everyday surroundings.
The filmmaker shared that after visiting Whitby, he spent several days exploring peaceful fishing towns and quiet neighbourhoods without any fixed itinerary. Rather than searching for specific subjects, he preferred watching ordinary life unfold naturally and documenting moments that often go unnoticed.
Discovering Stories in Everyday Moments
Khan also spoke about how street photography has changed the way he observes the world around him. He described the practice as a way to remain curious while building a stronger connection with everyday life. According to him, the most meaningful stories are frequently found in simple scenes that many people overlook during their daily routines.
He added that walking through towns with a camera, free from production schedules and deadlines, offers a refreshing change from filmmaking. The experience allows him to focus entirely on observation, creativity, and the small details that often inspire memorable images.
The director further revealed that the photographic journey was also physically rewarding. During his travels across Yorkshire, Bath, and London, he walked an average of around 15 kilometres each day while searching for interesting subjects to photograph, combining exploration with exercise.
