LegalFees – Blake Lively Seeks Nearly $8 Million After Defamation Case Dismissal
LegalFees – Actress Blake Lively is seeking to recover millions of dollars in legal expenses after a federal court dismissed a high-profile defamation lawsuit filed against her by actor and filmmaker Justin Baldoni and Wayfarer Studios.

Blake Lively has formally requested that a judge order Justin Baldoni and Wayfarer Studios to reimburse nearly $8 million in legal fees and related costs that she says were incurred while defending herself in a defamation lawsuit. The request follows a significant court decision that dismissed Baldoni’s $400 million defamation claim against Lively and her husband, Ryan Reynolds. According to court filings reported by Variety, Lively argues that the expenses resulted directly from litigation she believes was retaliatory in nature.
Background of the Legal Dispute
The legal conflict began after Lively accused her It Ends With Us co-star and director, Justin Baldoni, of sexual harassment during the production of the film. She also alleged that an online campaign was launched to damage her reputation after she raised concerns about the alleged misconduct.
Baldoni and Wayfarer Studios strongly denied those accusations. They maintained that Lively and Reynolds had made false allegations in an attempt to gain greater influence over the film’s production. Their response included a defamation lawsuit seeking $400 million in damages. However, the court later dismissed the case, concluding that Lively’s statements were protected under the legal principle of litigation privilege.
Court Allows Recovery of Legal Costs
Although Lively later withdrew her own lawsuit before the matter proceeded to trial, the resolution did not involve any financial settlement between the parties. The court, however, preserved her right to pursue reimbursement for attorney fees and litigation expenses related to defending against the dismissed defamation action.
Earlier this month, Judge Lewis Liman ruled that Lively could seek legal fees under a California law enacted in 2023. The legislation is designed to protect individuals who report sexual misconduct from retaliatory defamation lawsuits. While the judge declined to award additional damages, he determined that her request for legal costs could move forward.
Details of the Fee Request
Court documents submitted on Monday state that Lively’s legal representation billed approximately $7.5 million in attorney fees. The filing also notes that hourly billing rates reached as high as $2,187, while additional litigation-related expenses totaled around $540,000.
Her legal team argued that awarding these costs would reinforce the purpose of California’s protective law by discouraging lawsuits intended to intimidate individuals who report alleged misconduct. The filing further claims that the litigation was designed to undermine Lively’s credibility, discourage witnesses from cooperating, and create pressure through public attention rather than succeed on its legal merits.
Lawyers Respond to Earlier Court Decision
Following the judge’s earlier ruling, Lively’s lead attorneys, Michael Gottlieb and Esra Hudson, described the decision as an important legal milestone. They said the ruling sends a clear message that lawsuits used as tools of intimidation may carry financial consequences. According to the attorneys, the decision also strengthens protections for individuals who report alleged wrongdoing and may face retaliation through civil litigation.
Baldoni’s Side Awaits Next Hearing
Justin Baldoni’s attorney, Bryan Freedman, previously challenged that interpretation of the court’s ruling. He argued that the decision allowed only a limited request for attorney fees tied to a single legal issue and emphasized that Lively did not obtain the broader damages she had sought. Freedman also contended that the California law cited by Lively was intended to safeguard genuine victims and maintained that her effort to secure compensation had largely been unsuccessful.
At present, Baldoni’s legal team has not publicly responded to Lively’s latest filing requesting nearly $8 million in legal costs. They are expected to submit their arguments before the court determines whether the requested reimbursement will be granted.
