Disaster – Rescue and recovery operations remain underway in Venezuela after two powerful earthquakes struck within moments of each other, leaving widespread destruction across the coastal state of La Guaira. As officials continue to assess the full scale of the disaster, temporary facilities have been established to manage the growing number of victims while families desperately search for missing relatives.
Temporary Morgue Handles Rising Number of Victims
A section of the La Guaira port has been converted into a temporary morgue after hospitals reached capacity. Under the intense daytime heat, forensic specialists wearing protective clothing carefully examined bodies placed inside sealed bags. Coffins and other funeral supplies have been arranged across the area to support the identification process and final arrangements for the deceased.
Authorities have taken additional measures, including using lime on some remains, to help slow decomposition while identification continues. Nearby, rows of empty urns have been prepared for families choosing cremation services.
Among those waiting outside the facility was 25-year-old Wilker Molalla, who hoped to confirm the fate of several members of his family. According to him, only he and one of his brothers survived after the earthquakes struck while they were away at work. The remaining relatives are believed to have been inside buildings that collapsed during the disaster.
Powerful Earthquakes Caused Extensive Damage
The consecutive earthquakes, measuring 7.2 and 7.5 in magnitude, struck within seconds of each other and caused severe destruction across communities near Caracas. Residential towers, schools, shopping centers, and other buildings suffered catastrophic structural failures, trapping thousands beneath the debris.
The official death toll has climbed beyond 1,700, while emergency teams continue search and rescue operations. Many affected residents have expressed concern over the pace of the response, with some saying they have been forced to dig through collapsed structures using only their hands in the hope of finding surviving family members.
Families Face Difficult Identification Process
Medical teams and forensic experts continue working under temporary shelters to identify victims, issue official death certificates, and authorize cremations or burials. Specialized vehicles regularly transport medical waste generated during the examination process.
One grieving father, Antony Marcano, returned to the temporary morgue after an unsuccessful search the previous day. He said he was eventually able to identify his daughter through a ring he had given her, as her injuries made visual recognition nearly impossible.
Marcano later assisted in recovering her body from the collapsed structure where she had been trapped. Despite the emotional toll, he said finding her brought a painful sense of certainty after hours of uncertainty.
Thousands Still Await News of Missing Relatives
Authorities have not yet confirmed how many people remain trapped beneath the rubble. However, the United Nations has estimated that around 50,000 people are still unaccounted for and announced plans to provide approximately 10,000 body bags to assist ongoing recovery efforts.
The process of identifying victims has also become more complicated because many relatives who could provide confirmation remain hospitalized with injuries sustained during the earthquakes.
Community Support Offers Some Relief
Amid the devastation, funeral providers and volunteers have stepped forward to support grieving families. Several private funeral homes have offered free transportation for the deceased as well as complimentary cremation services to ease the financial burden on survivors.
Darwin Silva arrived to collect the remains of his mother after officials confirmed her identity. She had been discovered beneath a collapsed concrete beam inside the Hugo Chavez social housing complex, where neighbors used a generator to provide lighting during the nighttime rescue effort.
As families continue to mourn, Marcano encouraged others facing similar loss to remain hopeful throughout the difficult process. He said every family deserves the opportunity to recover their loved ones and provide them with a respectful and dignified final farewell.
