Security Talks – Iraq Backs Diplomacy as Iran and US Prepare for Fresh Doha Dialogue

Security Talks –  Iraq has renewed its support for dialogue and peaceful engagement as regional leaders work to ease tensions following recent military exchanges between Iran and the United States.

Iraq supports iran us doha talks

Iraq’s top leadership held separate discussions with visiting Iranian Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi, focusing on the recent memorandum of understanding (MoU) reached between Iran and the United States. The agreement is viewed as an important step toward reducing hostilities after a period of heightened military confrontation.

Iraqi Leadership Calls for Continued Dialogue

During his meeting with the Iranian foreign minister, Iraqi President Nizar Amedi emphasized that sustained communication between countries remains essential for creating a more secure and stable regional environment. According to an official statement from the Iraqi presidency, he underlined that constructive dialogue offers the best opportunity to resolve long-standing disputes and establish lasting political understandings.

Prime Minister Ali al-Zaidi echoed a similar position in his separate meeting with Araghchi. His office stated that Iraq believes ending armed conflicts through negotiations should remain the priority, arguing that regional stability would create stronger foundations for economic development, investment, and improved living conditions across neighboring countries.

Iran Appreciates Iraq’s Mediating Role

Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi praised Iraq’s diplomatic efforts in helping reduce regional tensions and encouraging communication among neighboring nations. He expressed Tehran’s appreciation for Iraq’s role in managing crises and narrowing differences between countries.

Araghchi also reaffirmed Iran’s commitment to maintaining positive relations with Arab states while strengthening cooperation with Iraq. He noted that continued coordination between the two governments would help expand bilateral partnerships across multiple sectors and contribute to regional stability.

Military Escalation Raised Global Concerns

The diplomatic meetings took place shortly after a series of military actions involving Iran and the United States increased concerns across the region.

The United States launched strikes on Iranian targets over Friday and Saturday, stating that the operations were carried out in response to what it described as continued Iranian actions affecting commercial shipping in the strategically important Strait of Hormuz.

Iran later responded by targeting American military positions in the region, further raising fears of a wider confrontation and disrupting international attention toward one of the world’s busiest maritime trade routes.

Doha Talks Aim to Reduce Tensions

Despite the recent exchange of military actions, both countries have agreed to temporarily suspend further attacks while diplomatic discussions continue.

According to media reports, representatives from Iran and the United States are scheduled to meet in Doha, the capital of Qatar, on Tuesday to discuss the dispute surrounding the Strait of Hormuz and explore measures to prevent further escalation.

A US official indicated that both sides have agreed to pause military activity for the time being, allowing commercial vessels to continue moving through the waterway as technical negotiations proceed.

The talks were initially planned to take place in Switzerland with primary attention on Iran’s nuclear programme. However, the renewed tensions surrounding maritime security in the Strait of Hormuz prompted a change of venue and agenda, placing shipping safety and regional stability at the center of the upcoming negotiations.
