JudicialInquiry – Prashant Kishor Backs Demand for Probe Into Bhojpur Encounter

JudicialInquiry –   A fresh political and public debate has emerged in Bihar following the death of 28-year-old Bharat Bhushan Tiwari in a disputed police encounter in Bhojpur district. On Wednesday, Jan Suraaj Party founder Prashant Kishor met members of Tiwari’s family and called for a comprehensive judicial investigation into the incident, which occurred on June 17.

Call for a Comprehensive Investigation

Speaking to reporters after meeting the family, Kishor stressed that the inquiry should not be limited to those directly involved in the operation. He said the investigation must identify every individual connected to the incident, including those who allegedly executed the action and those who may have authorized it. According to him, only an independent judicial process can establish accountability and restore public confidence.

Mahapanchayat Draws Strong Public Support

The issue gained further momentum as the Bharat Tiwari Sangharsh Samiti organized a Mahapanchayat on Wednesday to press for action in the case. Members of the committee claimed that public participation was significant and warned that the movement could expand if their demands remain unaddressed.

Representatives of the committee stated that a large turnout was expected at the gathering. They also indicated that if arrests are not made before the next phase of the campaign, protests could intensify through demonstrations, road blockades, and a march toward the Bihar Legislative Assembly.

Political Voices Join the Campaign

Former Congress legislator Munna Tiwari also addressed the gathering and said that public involvement was voluntary rather than politically mobilized. He argued that the large attendance reflected widespread concern over the incident.

He further demanded immediate action against those accused in the case and sought financial assistance for the bereaved family. In addition, he urged authorities to recognize Bharat Tiwari’s contribution to public causes and provide appropriate official recognition.

Family Plans to Continue Protest Movement

The deceased’s brother, Chandan Tiwari, announced that the family intends to continue its campaign beyond Bihar. He said that after completing the final rites, he plans to travel to New Delhi to seek broader public support and raise the matter at the national level.

His remarks underscored the family’s determination to pursue legal and public avenues in their quest for justice.

Criticism of Police Conduct

The controversy also drew reactions from educationist Roshan Anand, Director of Gyan Bindu GS Academy in Saharsa. He strongly criticized the handling of the encounter and questioned the circumstances surrounding the death.

Anand argued that law enforcement agencies are expected to protect citizens and maintain public trust. He called for a transparent and impartial investigation, saying that the administration must address public concerns and ensure that the facts are thoroughly examined.

Background of the Case

Bharat Bhushan Tiwari was a resident of Bilauti village in Bhojpur district and was known locally as a student and social activist. He had frequently raised issues related to alleged corruption and administrative shortcomings. Local residents were familiar with his efforts to draw attention to rehabilitation concerns affecting flood-hit communities, particularly in Jawania village.

His death during the police operation has sparked widespread discussion across Bihar and generated demands for accountability from various social and political groups.

FIR Registered Against Police Personnel

Amid mounting pressure, Bihar Police registered a First Information Report against the Jagdishpur Deputy Superintendent of Police, the Shahpur Station House Officer, and other police personnel linked to the operation. The FIR was lodged at Shahpur police station after a complaint submitted by Tiwari’s mother to the Bhojpur Superintendent of Police, alleging wrongful killing.

Government Orders Independent Judicial Probe

The matter has since evolved into a major political and legal issue in the state. Responding to public concern and growing demands for transparency, Bihar Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary directed that an independent judicial inquiry be conducted under the supervision of a retired High Court judge.

The state administration has also suspended four police officials, including the local SHO, pending the outcome of the investigation. Authorities have stated that the inquiry will examine all aspects of the case and determine responsibility based on evidence and legal findings.
