While the court has delivered its judgment on guilt, arguments regarding sentencing are yet to take place, and the punishment has not been announced.

Conviction Linked to 2023 Dediapada Incident

The case stems from an incident reported in Dediapada on October 30, 2023. According to the prosecution, forest department officials had taken action against crops allegedly grown on forest land in violation of government restrictions. Authorities had also instructed local residents to remove what were described as encroachments from protected land in the area.

Following the operation, prosecutors alleged that several forest officials were called to Vasava’s residence. The case was formally registered at Dediapada police station on November 2, 2023, based on complaints submitted by forest department employees.

Allegations of Threats and Physical Assault

During the trial, prosecutors argued that five forest officials were subjected to verbal abuse and threats after arriving at the residence. The complaint further stated that one employee was physically attacked during the confrontation.

Investigators also alleged that the accused demanded compensation for villagers whose crops had been removed during the enforcement action. According to the prosecution, pressure was placed on officials to arrange payments for the affected cultivators.

Arms Act and Intimidation Charges Included

The prosecution additionally claimed that Vasava discharged a firearm into the air during the incident despite not possessing a valid licence for the weapon. Officials told the court that threats were allegedly issued, warning government employees of consequences if compensation was not provided.

Based on these allegations, multiple charges were filed, including rioting, extortion, criminal intimidation of public servants, and offences under the Arms Act. Investigators further stated that on the day following the incident, a personal assistant associated with Vasava allegedly contacted forest officials and repeated the demand for compensation.

Several Co-Accused Found Guilty

Among those convicted alongside Vasava are Shakuntala Vasava, who was serving as a member of the Narmada District Panchayat at the time, along with aide Jitendra, villager Ramesh Vasava, and several residents from Jhadoli and Bogaj villages who were named in the First Information Report.

Police arrested some of the accused soon after the complaint was filed. However, Vasava remained unavailable to investigators for several weeks before eventually surrendering before authorities on December 14, 2023. He was later granted bail.

Political Significance of the Verdict

Despite the ongoing legal proceedings, Vasava continued his political activities and contested the 2024 Lok Sabha election from Bharuch as the AAP candidate. He rose to prominence after securing victory from the Dediapada Assembly constituency in the 2022 Gujarat Assembly elections and has since been regarded as one of the party’s leading tribal representatives.

His political career has largely focused on tribal welfare, land-related concerns, and issues affecting rural communities in south Gujarat. As a result, the conviction arrives at a politically sensitive moment for the AAP, particularly in tribal regions where Vasava remains a well-known figure.

High Court Had Earlier Rejected Defence Plea

The case had also reached higher judicial forums during the course of the trial. On May 27 this year, the Gujarat High Court dismissed a plea filed by Vasava seeking permission to examine additional defence witnesses.

The High Court observed that the application appeared aimed at delaying the proceedings and noted that similar requests had already been rejected by lower courts as well as the Supreme Court. The court also rejected claims that the trial process was unfair, clearing the way for the proceedings to continue toward their conclusion.
