FireSafety – Lucknow Blaze Triggers Arrests and Criminal Investigation
FireSafety – A criminal case has been registered against several individuals linked to a commercial building in Lucknow’s Aliganj locality following a devastating fire that claimed 18 lives and left multiple people injured. Authorities have alleged serious lapses in safety arrangements at the premises, where many of the victims were young adults aged between 20 and 24 years.

FIR Filed Against Multiple Accused
Police confirmed that an FIR has been lodged at Aliganj Police Station against six named persons in connection with the incident. The case has been registered under Sections 105, 110, 125 and 3(5) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).
Among those arrested are three property owners — Ramkrishna Upadhyay, Virendra Prasad Shukla and Tushank Krishna Jaiswal. Later, investigators also detained Suresh Kumar Sahu, who was operating a studio within the building. Officials stated that further action may follow as the investigation progresses.
Commercial Building Housed Multiple Businesses
According to information contained in the complaint, the three-storey structure located in Sector-D near Purania Chauraha accommodated several commercial establishments. The ground and first floors reportedly housed a pet clinic and pet shop, while the second floor contained a gaming zone and a 3D animation training facility. An IT networking office was operating from the top floor.
Investigators believe the fire began inside the pet shop and clinic during the afternoon and quickly spread smoke throughout the building. The dense smoke made rescue efforts extremely difficult and trapped occupants on different floors. Several animals housed inside the pet facility also died in the incident.
Alleged Lack of Essential Safety Measures
Preliminary findings indicate that the building may not have complied with basic fire safety requirements. The complaint submitted to police alleges that no adequate firefighting systems had been installed and that occupants had no emergency evacuation route available during the crisis.
Officials examining the site reported that the structure had only one access point serving as both entry and exit. Investigators further noted the absence of a smoke extraction or ventilation mechanism, conditions that may have contributed to the rapid spread of smoke across the premises.
Authorities are also examining electrical installations within the building after allegations that maintenance standards were not properly followed.
Owners and Operators Accused of Negligence
The FIR names building owners, business operators and other unidentified individuals as accused. Investigators have alleged that those responsible for managing the property were aware of safety obligations but failed to implement necessary precautions.
Police sources stated that the inquiry is focusing on whether negligence and disregard for mandatory safety norms directly contributed to the scale of the tragedy. Statements from witnesses and survivors are being recorded as part of the ongoing investigation.
Panic and Desperate Escape Attempts
As flames and smoke spread through the structure, people inside reportedly struggled to find a safe way out. Rescue teams later learned that some occupants attempted to escape by jumping from higher levels of the building after traditional exit routes became inaccessible.
Several individuals suffered serious injuries during these desperate attempts to save themselves. Emergency responders and local residents worked together to evacuate those trapped inside while firefighting teams battled the blaze.
Government Responds to Tragedy
Following the incident, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath expressed condolences to the families affected by the disaster. Financial assistance was also announced for the victims and their relatives.
The chief minister shortened his scheduled visit to Aligarh and returned to Lucknow, where he visited hospitals to meet injured survivors and review relief efforts being carried out by local authorities.
Detailed Probe Underway
Government agencies and law enforcement officials have launched a comprehensive investigation into the cause of the fire and the alleged violations of safety regulations. Authorities are expected to examine licensing records, structural compliance documents and fire safety certifications connected to the building.
The findings of the probe will determine whether additional charges are warranted and if more individuals could face legal action in connection with one of the city’s deadliest recent fire tragedies.
