CricketUpdates – India Rotates Squad as Afghanistan Opts to Bat in Final ODI

CricketUpdates –  India chose to experiment with its lineup in the third and final One Day International against Afghanistan after already securing the series, giving several squad members an opportunity to showcase their abilities. The match is being played at the MA Chidambaram Stadium, where Afghanistan captain Hashmatullah Shahidi won the toss and elected to bat first.

India rotates squad final odi vs afghanistan

The absence of KL Rahul from India’s playing XI sparked discussion ahead of the match, but team management clarified that the experienced wicketkeeper-batter has neither been dropped nor is he dealing with any fitness issue. Instead, he has been rested as part of a planned rotation strategy.

India Makes Three Changes After Series Victory

With the outcome of the series already decided, the Indian team management used the final fixture to test its bench strength. Nitish Kumar Reddy, Harsh Dubey and Prasidh Krishna were brought back into the side, replacing KL Rahul, Arshdeep Singh and Kuldeep Yadav, who were given a break.

The move reflects India’s broader approach of providing match exposure to a larger group of players ahead of future international assignments. Team selectors and management have often emphasized the importance of building depth across all departments.

Shubman Gill Explains Team’s Approach

Speaking after the toss, India captain Shubman Gill said his side would also have preferred to bat first on what appeared to be a favorable batting surface. However, he expressed confidence in the team’s opportunity to improve its performance while chasing.

Gill noted that one of India’s focus areas has been developing greater consistency in successful run chases, particularly when pursuing large totals. According to him, the team intends to use the match as a valuable learning opportunity despite already holding an unbeatable lead in the series.

He also acknowledged the challenging weather conditions, saying the heat experienced during the previous encounter was expected to continue in the series finale.

Focus on Strengthening Chase Capabilities

India’s leadership group believes that improving the team’s ability to comfortably chase substantial targets remains an important objective. While the batting lineup has produced strong performances in recent months, the management wants players to become more adaptable in different match situations.

The final ODI therefore offers a practical setting for testing strategies under pressure while allowing newer players to gain experience at the international level.

Harshit Rana Misses Out

Despite recently joining India’s ODI setup and being available for selection, Harshit Rana did not find a place in the playing XI. The team instead opted for a combination that balanced experience with opportunities for returning players.

His exclusion is understood to be a tactical decision rather than a reflection on form or fitness, as India continues to assess various options within the squad.

Afghanistan Looking to End Series on a Positive Note

Afghanistan entered the contest aiming to finish the series with a strong performance. Their playing XI features several established names, including Rahmanullah Gurbaz, Ibrahim Zadran, Rahmat Shah, Mohammad Nabi, Rashid Khan and captain Hashmatullah Shahidi.

Having lost the series, the visitors will look to capitalize on batting first and post a competitive total against an Indian side experimenting with its lineup.

The match presents an important opportunity for Afghanistan’s players to gain momentum and confidence while testing themselves against one of the strongest teams in world cricket.
