NEET Re-Exam – Rahul Gandhi Questions NTA Over Overseas Exam Centre Allocation

NEET Re-Exam – Congress leader Rahul Gandhi has sharply criticized the National Testing Agency (NTA) after a NEET-UG candidate from Nagpur was reportedly assigned an examination centre in Abu Dhabi for the upcoming re-test scheduled on June 21. The incident has sparked fresh concerns about the management of one of India’s largest entrance examinations and the challenges faced by students during the admission process.

Candidate’s Family Raises Concern

According to the student’s family, the Nagpur-based aspirant discovered only a day before the examination that his allotted centre was located in Abu Dhabi. The family stated that the student neither possesses a passport nor has the financial means required for international travel at such short notice. The unexpected allocation reportedly caused significant distress within the household.

Following the complaint, the National Testing Agency said the matter was being addressed. The agency stated that, after verification of the candidate’s details, a new examination centre in Nagpur would be assigned within a few hours.

Rahul Gandhi Targets Examination Authority

Reacting to the development through a post on social media platform X, Rahul Gandhi expressed concern over the emotional impact such errors can have on students. He noted that the candidate had spent several weeks preparing for the re-examination and was left shocked after discovering the overseas centre allocation shortly before the test date.

Gandhi highlighted the pressure faced by students during competitive examinations and questioned how such a mistake could occur. He argued that no candidate should be placed in a situation where reaching the examination venue becomes impossible.

Questions Raised Over Examination Management

The Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha said the incident reflected broader issues within the examination system. According to him, an organization that fails to provide a local examination centre and instead allocates one in another country must be held accountable for such lapses.

He further stated that students and parents across the country have repeatedly faced stress due to administrative shortcomings. Gandhi emphasized that educational institutions and examination authorities should prioritize transparency, responsibility, and student welfare.

Link to Wider Education Concerns

The controversy comes amid the Congress party’s ongoing campaign focused on issues affecting students, including examination paper leaks and rising educational expenses. Gandhi recently launched a signature drive aimed at highlighting concerns related to the country’s education framework and providing students with a platform to communicate their demands directly to the government.

The initiative follows his interaction with students at an event in Kota, Rajasthan, a city widely known for its coaching institutes and competitive exam preparation centres.

Criticism of Existing Education Structure

During the Kota event, Gandhi described the current education system as overly stressful for students and their families. He argued that the existing structure places a significant financial burden on middle-class households while creating intense academic pressure.

According to him, the system often focuses more on rejection than opportunity, leaving many students struggling with uncertainty despite years of preparation and investment.

Background of NEET-UG Re-Examination

The NEET-UG 2026 examination process has remained under scrutiny after the May 3 test was cancelled following allegations of a paper leak. In response to the controversy, the government directed the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to conduct a detailed inquiry into the matter.

As preparations continue for the re-examination, incidents such as the Nagpur candidate’s centre allocation have renewed discussions about examination management, student welfare, and the need for greater accountability within the country’s competitive testing system.
