DefenseSupport – US Clears New Military Support Packages for India Worth $428 Million

DefenseSupport – The United States has approved two defence support packages for India valued at a combined $428.2 million, aimed at maintaining and strengthening key military platforms already in service with the Indian armed forces. The approvals focus on long-term support, logistics, maintenance, training, and technical assistance for M777A2 Ultra-Light Howitzers and AH-64E Apache attack helicopters rather than the supply of new weapons systems.

Pentagon Notifies Congress of Proposed Support Agreements

According to official notifications issued by the US Defense Security Cooperation Agency (DSCA), the proposals were recently submitted to the US Congress after being published in the Federal Register. The packages are designed to ensure operational readiness and long-term sustainment of critical defence assets used by India.

Officials emphasized that the proposed arrangements are primarily centred on support services, spare parts, technical expertise, and logistics infrastructure necessary to keep the platforms functioning efficiently over the coming years.

Major Package Focuses on M777A2 Howitzer Sustainment

The larger proposal, valued at approximately $230 million, relates to long-term support for India’s fleet of M777A2 Ultra-Light Howitzers. The package includes repair services, replacement components, technical assistance, training programmes, field support personnel, depot-level maintenance capabilities, and various logistics services.

In its policy justification, the Pentagon highlighted that the agreement aligns with broader US foreign policy and national security objectives. It stated that strengthening India’s defence capabilities contributes to regional stability and supports a key strategic partner in both the Indo-Pacific and South Asian regions.

US officials also noted that the assistance would help India address existing security challenges while preparing for future threats, enhancing national defence preparedness and deterrence capabilities.

BAE Systems Named Principal Contractor

The primary contractor associated with the howitzer sustainment programme is BAE Systems, which is headquartered in Cumbria, United Kingdom. The notification clarified that the implementation of the package would not require any additional deployment of US government personnel or contractor representatives within India.

The arrangement is expected to improve maintenance efficiency and ensure that the artillery systems remain combat-ready for extended periods.

Apache Helicopter Support Package Approved

A separate proposal worth $198.2 million has been approved to provide continued support for India’s AH-64E Apache attack helicopters. The package covers engineering assistance, technical and logistics support, training programmes, publications, operational guidance, and other sustainment-related services.

The Pentagon used similar reasoning in support of the Apache package, describing India as a major defence partner whose security and stability play an important role in the wider Indo-Pacific region. Officials stated that the support would strengthen India’s ability to respond to emerging security challenges while maintaining a strong defensive posture.

Boeing and Lockheed Martin to Lead Programme

The principal contractors involved in the Apache support package are Boeing, headquartered in Arlington, Virginia, and Lockheed Martin, based in Orlando, Florida. US authorities indicated that the proposed transaction would have no negative impact on American military preparedness or operational capabilities.

The notification further stated that the package does not involve the transfer of major new defence equipment and that no offset agreements have been identified at this stage.

Growing Defence Partnership Between India and the US

Both support arrangements will be financed through India’s national funds. The approvals come at a time when defence cooperation between New Delhi and Washington continues to expand across multiple areas, including military exercises, technology sharing, logistics cooperation, and strategic planning.

Over the past two decades, defence trade between the two countries has grown significantly, rising from minimal levels to more than $20 billion. The latest support packages reflect the increasing importance of the bilateral relationship and the shared objective of enhancing security and stability across the Indo-Pacific region.
