UrbanDevelopment – Sandhu Reviews Khan Market Upgrade and Water Conservation Projects

UrbanDevelopment –  Lieutenant Governor Taranjit Singh Sandhu on Tuesday conducted a detailed review of two key infrastructure projects in the Lutyens’ Delhi area, highlighting the importance of sustainable urban planning and stronger water conservation systems for the national capital. The visit focused on ongoing redevelopment efforts at Khan Market and the implementation of an advanced rainwater harvesting project under the New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC).

Sandhu reviews khan market upgrade projects

Focus on Khan Market Redevelopment

During his visit to Khan Market, one of Delhi’s most prominent commercial hubs, Sandhu inspected the progress of the redevelopment work currently underway. Senior NDMC officials, including the council chairperson and engineering teams, briefed him on various aspects of the project and provided updates on implementation and timelines.

According to officials, the redevelopment aims to improve the overall experience for visitors while enhancing the functionality of the market. The project includes measures designed to streamline traffic movement, improve pedestrian access, and upgrade civic facilities in the area.

Enhancing Public Infrastructure

While interacting with officials, Sandhu stressed the significance of modernising important public spaces that serve residents, tourists, and businesses alike. He noted that upgrading established commercial districts is necessary to meet evolving urban requirements and improve the quality of public infrastructure.

The Lieutenant Governor reviewed plans related to civic amenities and discussed strategies to ensure that the market remains accessible, organised, and capable of handling increasing visitor footfall. Authorities informed him that efforts are being made to position Khan Market as a globally recognised destination with improved urban facilities and better public convenience.

Directions for Timely Completion

During the inspection, Sandhu instructed concerned departments to accelerate the remaining development work while maintaining strict quality standards. He also emphasised the need to adhere to all safety norms throughout the execution process.

Officials were directed to ensure that construction and infrastructure improvements are completed efficiently without compromising long-term durability. The Lieutenant Governor reiterated the administration’s commitment to creating a modern and sustainable urban environment across Delhi through carefully planned development initiatives.

Review of Rainwater Harvesting System

Apart from the Khan Market project, Sandhu also reviewed the Modular Rainwater Harvesting System being implemented at Satya Marg under NDMC jurisdiction. The project is part of broader efforts to strengthen water conservation infrastructure in the city.

NDMC representatives provided a detailed presentation on the system’s design, operational capabilities, and sustainability features. The Lieutenant Governor also interacted with officers responsible for overseeing on-site execution and examined the progress of the project.

Emphasis on Water Conservation

During the review, Sandhu underlined the growing importance of decentralised water management systems in urban areas. He stated that strengthening local water conservation infrastructure is essential for addressing future environmental challenges and supporting long-term sustainability goals.

The Lieutenant Governor observed that climate-resilient cities require efficient mechanisms for water preservation and resource management. He noted that initiatives such as rainwater harvesting can play a significant role in reducing pressure on existing water resources while improving environmental resilience.

The two reviews reflect the administration’s broader focus on improving urban infrastructure, modernising public spaces, and promoting sustainable development practices across Delhi. Officials said these projects are expected to contribute to both civic improvement and environmental sustainability in the years ahead
