Pilgrimage – Devotees Gather in Large Numbers at Ujjain Temple During Sacred Occasion
Pilgrimage – Thousands of worshippers visited the famous Mahakaleshwar Jyotirlinga Temple in Ujjain on Monday to take part in religious ceremonies and seek blessings on the occasion of Somvati Amavasya, which this year coincided with the highly revered Purushottam Maas, also known as Adhik Maas.

Early Morning Rituals Draw Massive Crowds
The temple complex witnessed an overwhelming turnout from the early hours of the day as devotees lined up to attend the renowned Bhasma Aarti and offer prayers to Lord Mahakaleshwar. Pilgrims carrying flowers, sacred offerings, and prayer materials arrived steadily throughout the morning, creating an atmosphere filled with faith and devotion.
Many visitors had travelled long distances to participate in the special rituals associated with the auspicious occasion. Temple authorities managed the large influx of worshippers as crowds continued to grow during the day.
Religious Importance of Purushottam Maas
Purushottam Maas holds a unique place in Hindu traditions and is regarded as a highly auspicious period for spiritual practices and worship. Followers believe that prayers offered during this sacred month bring divine blessings, prosperity, and positive outcomes in life.
The coincidence of Somvati Amavasya with Purushottam Maas further increased the significance of the day, attracting devotees from different regions of the country to the temple.
Special Significance of Monday Worship
The spiritual atmosphere became even more pronounced because Somvati Amavasya fell on a Monday, a day traditionally dedicated to the worship of Lord Shiva. Religious followers consider Mondays especially favorable for offering prayers to the deity, making the occasion particularly meaningful for devotees visiting the temple.
According to temple officials, the number of visitors remained exceptionally high throughout the day, reflecting the deep faith associated with both the lunar observance and the sacred month.
Priests Highlight Devotees’ Faith
Speaking about the occasion, temple priest Akash Sharma said that worshippers from various parts of India had reached the Mahakaleshwar Temple to participate in the Bhasma Aarti and pray for happiness, prosperity, and the fulfilment of personal aspirations.
Devotees were seen offering prayers for family well-being, peace, good health, and success. Many spent hours waiting for darshan of the revered Jyotirlinga, considering the occasion spiritually rewarding.
Bhasma Aarti Remains a Major Attraction
The Mahakaleshwar Temple is counted among the twelve sacred Jyotirlingas of Lord Shiva and attracts devotees from across India and abroad. One of its most distinctive traditions is the Bhasma Aarti, performed before dawn, during which Lord Shiva is worshipped using sacred ash in accordance with ancient customs.
The ritual continues to be one of the temple’s most significant spiritual attractions and draws large numbers of pilgrims throughout the year.
Observances Associated With Somvati Amavasya
Somvati Amavasya is considered an important day in Hindu religious practices. Devotees traditionally perform holy bathing, charitable activities, prayers, and rituals dedicated to their ancestors. Many people visit sacred rivers for ritual baths and engage in acts of charity, believing such deeds bring spiritual merit.
The occasion is also associated with ancestral worship, and followers perform specific ceremonies to seek blessings for their forefathers and address concerns linked to Pitru Dosha. Religious activities such as havan, yajna, mantra recitation, feeding animals, and donations are commonly observed as part of the day’s traditions.
