Rescue – Residents and Police Join Hands During Deadly Tughlakabad Fire

Rescue – A devastating fire that broke out in a residential building in Delhi’s Tughlakabad area early Friday morning witnessed remarkable acts of courage from residents and emergency responders. As thick smoke and intense flames spread through the structure, several local people risked their own safety to help those trapped inside.

A 16-year-old resident, Anshu Sharma, emerged as one of the key figures in the rescue efforts. At around 2:15 a.m., she woke up after noticing smoke and flames engulfing a nearby building from her balcony. Realizing that several occupants were stranded on the upper floors, she immediately alerted her father, Saurabh Sharma, about the emergency.

Teenager’s Quick Thinking Helps Rescue Operation

As panic spread through the neighborhood, Anshu looked for a way to assist those trapped. Spotting people stranded on the third floor with no immediate escape route, she rolled a saree and threw it toward them in an attempt to provide support during the rescue. Her timely action became one of several examples of bravery witnessed during the incident.

According to her father, residents across the locality were doing everything possible to help. He said people acted instinctively, using whatever resources were available to assist those caught inside the burning structure.

Residents Rush to Assist Despite Dangerous Conditions

Local resident Renu Bhutani said she and her son rushed to the scene immediately after learning about the fire. By the time they arrived, cries for help could be heard from different sections of the building. However, reaching those trapped proved extremely difficult due to the severe heat and dense smoke.

She explained that several vehicles parked on the ground floor were engulfed in flames, and repeated explosions made entry into the building highly dangerous. Despite the risks, local residents continued searching for ways to reach the stranded occupants.

Improvised Rescue Measures Save Several Lives

As conventional access routes became inaccessible, residents began using makeshift methods to evacuate people. Sarees were used to help bring trapped individuals to safety from terraces and rear sections of the building. A drilling machine was also employed to create access points during the rescue effort.

Bhutani stated that local volunteers managed to rescue around eight people before firefighting teams fully took control of the situation. Residents also formed bucket lines, carrying water continuously in an attempt to slow the spread of the flames until emergency services arrived.

Locked Access Delays Rescue Efforts

One of the major challenges faced during the operation was the absence of a clear escape route for people trapped on the upper floors. Residents attempted to reach the building’s terrace through a neighboring property but discovered that the connecting gate was locked.

After repeated unsuccessful attempts to open it, locals eventually forced the gate open. They also damaged rooftop water pipelines connected to storage tanks, allowing water to flow through the staircase area. This helped reduce smoke accumulation and improved visibility for rescue efforts.

Police Personnel Among First Responders

Among the earliest responders was constable Robin, who climbed onto the terrace of an adjacent building to assist in the evacuation process. Residents credited him with helping rescue seven to eight people who had become trapped inside the smoke-filled structure.

Authorities noted that nine families lived in the building, although several residents were reportedly away from home at the time of the incident due to vacations and travel plans.

Cause of Fire Under Discussion

Witnesses described the smoke as so thick that standing close to the building became nearly impossible. Residents from across the neighborhood gathered to support the rescue operation, but visibility remained severely limited throughout the emergency.

Some local residents believe the fire may have intensified after two-wheelers parked on the ground floor caught fire and exploded. Officials are expected to determine the exact cause following a detailed investigation.
