Democracy – Political developments in Madhya Pradesh have intensified after Congress leaders launched a protest against the cancellation of senior party leader Meenakshi Natarajan’s Rajya Sabha nomination. The opposition party described the decision as a serious concern for democratic processes and announced that it would continue its agitation despite administrative restrictions.
Congress Signals Readiness for Arrest During Protest
Speaking to journalists during the demonstration, Madhya Pradesh Congress president Jitu Patwari stated that party workers were prepared to face arrest if authorities prevented them from holding peaceful protests. He questioned whether democratic institutions were allowing sufficient space for public dissent and political expression.
Patwari argued that citizens should take note of what he described as an increasingly restrictive approach toward opposition voices. According to him, participating in protest marches and public demonstrations is a legitimate democratic right. He maintained that Congress leaders would continue their campaign even if it resulted in detention or legal action.

Congress MLA Vikrant Bhuria described the cancellation of Meenakshi Natarajan’s nomination as a disappointing moment for democratic institutions. He argued that the move was difficult to justify because, according to him, there were no criminal proceedings or formal police cases registered against the Congress leader.
Bhuria also raised the issue of women’s representation in politics. He noted that while discussions about increasing opportunities for women in public life frequently take place, the BJP had not fielded any woman among its three Rajya Sabha candidates from the state. In contrast, he said, Congress had nominated a woman candidate and expected her to receive a fair opportunity to contest.
Congress Alleges Political Motives Behind the Move
Congress leader Kunal Choudhary echoed similar concerns and accused the ruling party of undermining constitutional principles. He claimed that the circumstances leading to Natarajan’s nomination cancellation reflected a broader pattern of political pressure against opposition figures.
According to Choudhary, Natarajan has long been associated with Gandhian ideals and public service. He questioned why her candidature was challenged despite the absence of any criminal record or FIR against her. Choudhary further argued that the action was based on a private complaint and notice, which he said should not have been sufficient grounds to block her nomination.
