WeatherAlert – Heavy Rain Warning Issued Across Tamil Nadu Amid Widespread Disruptions
WeatherAlert – Several parts of Tamil Nadu continued to experience intense rainfall on Tuesday, prompting the India Meteorological Department (IMD) to issue a heavy rain warning for multiple districts over the next two days. The weather system has already affected normal life in many regions, leading to waterlogging, power interruptions, traffic difficulties, and damage to property.
IMD Forecast for Multiple Districts
According to the latest forecast from the IMD, heavy rainfall is expected on Wednesday and Thursday in 16 districts across the state. These include Coimbatore, The Nilgiris, Theni, Tiruppur, Tirunelveli, Tenkasi, Dindigul, Kanniyakumari, Erode, Salem, Dharmapuri, Krishnagiri, Tirupattur, Vellore, Ranipet and Tiruvannamalai. Authorities are closely monitoring the situation as weather conditions remain active across southern India.
The weather department also noted that atmospheric conditions continue to support the arrival of the southwest monsoon over Kerala, which is expected to begin on Thursday.
Hospital and Market Areas Face Flooding
The impact of heavy showers was visible in several districts on Tuesday. In Namakkal district, rainwater entered the government hospital campus located near the old bus stand in Rasipuram. Patients, hospital staff and visitors were forced to move through accumulated water that reached knee level in some areas.
Nearby commercial zones around the new bus stand market also reported significant waterlogging, affecting regular business operations and pedestrian movement throughout the day.
Hailstorm and Strong Winds Cause Damage
Tirupattur district witnessed unusual weather conditions as hailstorms were reported in Ambur, Alangkuppam and Periyankuppam. Strong winds accompanying the rainfall caused several trees to collapse in different localities.
In one incident near Nagalamman Temple in Vinnamangalam, a Poovarasu tree fell onto a residential building. Elsewhere, a large banyan tree crashed onto the premises of the Dandu Mariamman Temple, resulting in structural damage.
Injuries Reported After Tree Falls on Vehicle
Heavy rainfall continued for more than three hours in parts of Tiruvannamalai district, including Arani, Savur, Kunnathur and Kamakkur. The prolonged downpour disrupted daily activities and caused power supply interruptions in several areas.
A serious incident occurred in Melnagar village when a tamarind tree toppled onto a moving mini-bus. More than ten passengers, including the driver, sustained injuries and received medical attention. Local officials responded to the scene and cleared the obstruction from the roadway.
Rain Affects Transport and Electricity Supply
Other districts including Tiruppur, Erode, Karur, Tiruchirappalli, Madurai, Sivaganga and Dindigul also recorded substantial rainfall. Flooded roads were reported in several urban and rural areas, slowing traffic movement and creating difficulties for commuters.
In Madurai, electricity supply was temporarily affected in locations such as Mattuthavani, Periyar Bus Stand, Simmakkal, Melur, Thirumangalam and surrounding airport zones, adding to the challenges faced by residents during the weather event.
Dense Fog Reduces Visibility in Kodaikanal
The hill town of Kodaikanal experienced a sudden spell of dense fog during the evening along with light rain. Visibility dropped sharply across major roads and tourist areas, making travel difficult. Residents described conditions that resembled nighttime despite daylight hours, forcing motorists to exercise extra caution.
Chennai Likely to Receive Moderate Rain
For Chennai and nearby areas, the IMD has predicted partly cloudy conditions with chances of moderate rainfall. Some localities may also experience thunderstorms during the coming days as the weather system continues to influence the region.
Officials have advised residents in vulnerable locations to stay alert and follow updates issued by local authorities and weather agencies as rainfall activity is expected to continue.
