Education – A tragic incident involving an Indian student in Canada has left a family in Gujarat mourning the loss of their young daughter while awaiting the return of her mortal remains for final rites. Indian authorities in Canada have confirmed that they are extending assistance to the family following the death of 22-year-old Vidhi Megha in the Niagara region.
The Consulate General of India in Toronto expressed deep grief over the incident and said it is actively coordinating with the family members, local authorities, and funeral service providers. Officials stated that every possible effort is being made to support the bereaved family, including arrangements required for transporting the body to India.
Consulate Assures Support to Family
In an official statement, the Consulate conveyed its condolences and said it remains in regular contact with Vidhi Megha’s relatives in both India and Canada. The mission emphasized that it is providing necessary guidance and assistance during this difficult period.
The Indian diplomatic mission noted that it stands in solidarity with the family and is helping complete the formalities associated with repatriation. Authorities have also been coordinating with relevant agencies to ensure the process moves forward smoothly.
Incident Reported in Niagara Region
According to information shared by family members, Vidhi Megha lost her life on May 15 in St. Catharines, located in Canada’s Niagara region. Reports indicate that she was allegedly attacked with a knife in what investigators are treating as a suspected homicide case.
The circumstances surrounding the incident remain under investigation by Canadian authorities. No additional official details regarding the case have been publicly released.
Family Seeks Early Return of Mortal Remains
Speaking about the tragedy, Vidhi’s father, Kalpeshbhai Megha, appealed for assistance in bringing his daughter’s body back to India. He said the family wishes to conduct her final rites in her hometown and hopes the repatriation process can be completed at the earliest.
Kalpeshbhai stated that he was informed about his daughter’s death by local police authorities. Following the notification, he contacted relatives living in Canada to begin the required legal and administrative procedures.
He explained that family members overseas have already initiated the necessary documentation and are working with officials to facilitate the transfer of the mortal remains.
Academic Journey in Canada
Vidhi Megha had moved to Canada to pursue higher education and build a professional future. According to her father, she successfully completed a three-year program in business management before enrolling in a Personal Support Worker honours course.
Family members said she was focused on advancing her education and career opportunities. Her relatives, including her uncle who resides in Canada, had been supporting her during her studies abroad.
Gujarat Minister Raises Matter With Authorities
The incident has also drawn attention from public representatives in Gujarat. State Cabinet Minister and Borsad MLA Ramanbhai Solanki visited the grieving family to offer condolences and discuss their concerns.
After meeting the family, Solanki said he had communicated with senior government offices regarding the matter. According to him, discussions were held with both the Chief Minister’s Office and the Prime Minister’s Office to help expedite the return of Vidhi’s mortal remains.
The minister said the family’s primary request is to bring their daughter home without unnecessary delay so that traditional funeral ceremonies can be performed in the presence of relatives and community members. He assured them that efforts are being made to facilitate the process as quickly as possible.
