CoolingCenter – Delhi to Open Solar-Powered Heat Relief Shelter in June
CoolingCenter – As temperatures continue to soar across the national capital, the Delhi government is preparing to introduce a solar-powered public cooling shelter in northwest Delhi as part of a pilot initiative aimed at helping residents cope with extreme summer conditions. The project is being developed to provide a comfortable resting space for people who spend long periods outdoors and are exposed to intense heat during the day.
Pilot Project Near Completion
Officials associated with the project said construction work is currently in progress and is expected to be completed by the end of May. The facility is planned for Shalimar Bagh and is likely to be formally opened during the first week of June. The inauguration is expected to be carried out by Chief Minister Rekha Gupta.
The cooling structure has been designed in the form of a compact hut and incorporates traditional methods of temperature control along with modern sustainable technology. Authorities believe the project could serve as a model for similar installations in other parts of the city if the trial proves successful.
Traditional Cooling Method at the Core
One of the key features of the shelter is the use of khus grass coverings on all sides of the structure. Khus, long known for its natural cooling properties, has been widely used in India during hot weather. The hut will also be equipped with a sprinkler arrangement that keeps the grass moist, allowing cooler air to circulate within the enclosure.
This combination is expected to create a more comfortable environment compared to the surrounding outdoor conditions. Visitors will be able to sit inside the shaded area and take a break from the harsh summer heat.
Facilities for Public Convenience
The planned cooling zone will offer more than just protection from high temperatures. Authorities have included several public amenities to improve convenience and comfort for visitors. Seating arrangements will be available inside the structure, enabling people to rest during the hottest parts of the day.
In addition, the facility will provide access to chilled drinking water through dedicated dispensers. Mobile phone charging points are also being installed so that visitors can recharge their devices while using the shelter. These additions are intended to make the space practical and useful for a wide range of residents, workers, and commuters.
Solar Energy to Power the Structure
A major feature of the project is its reliance on renewable energy. Solar panels placed on the roof will generate the electricity required to operate the facility. By using solar power, the government aims to reduce energy consumption from conventional sources while ensuring that the shelter remains functional during periods of high demand.
