Judiciary – The Supreme Court has issued a significant directive aimed at improving the speed of judicial proceedings across the country. On Friday, the court instructed all high courts to ensure that judgments in cases where orders have been reserved are delivered within three months. The court observed that prolonged delays in pronouncing verdicts can cause serious hardship to individuals waiting for justice and may adversely affect their legal rights.
Focus on Reducing Delays
The ruling was delivered by a bench comprising Chief Justice Surya Kant and Justice Joymalya Baghchi. The judges highlighted that unnecessary delays between reserving and pronouncing judgments can undermine public confidence in the judicial process. They stressed that courts must make every effort to avoid prolonged waiting periods and provide timely outcomes to litigants.
According to the bench, the timely delivery of judgments is an essential component of effective justice. Individuals involved in legal disputes often face emotional, financial, and personal challenges while awaiting court decisions. Therefore, ensuring that verdicts are delivered within a reasonable timeframe is critical to maintaining fairness in the legal system.

Guidelines for Reserved Bail Orders
In situations where a court chooses to reserve its decision on a bail application, the Supreme Court directed that the order should be pronounced and uploaded by the following day. This measure is intended to prevent extended uncertainty for applicants and ensure that judicial decisions are made available without undue delay.
The court observed that modern judicial administration should support quick communication and accessibility of court orders. Prompt publication of decisions can help legal representatives, litigants, and authorities take necessary action without waiting for extended periods.
Faster Communication to Jail Authorities
The apex court also issued instructions regarding the implementation of bail orders and sentence suspension orders. It said that whenever such relief is granted, the relevant order should be communicated immediately to prison authorities.
The objective is to ensure that undertrial prisoners or convicted individuals who have received legal relief are not kept in custody longer than necessary due to administrative delays. The court stated that release should preferably take place on the same day the order is issued. If that is not possible, it should be completed no later than the following day.
