MiddleEastSecurity – Israeli Official Calls for Palestinian Authority Leadership Reforms

MiddleEastSecurity – Deputy Head of the Samaria Regional Council, Davidi Ben-Zion, has urged the Palestinian Authority to end financial support for individuals involved in attacks against Israelis and reform its education system, saying these changes are necessary to improve conditions for both Israelis and Palestinians.

Middleeast security palestinian leadership reforms

Speaking during an interaction with ANI on Wednesday, Ben-Zion argued that the current situation in the region reflects deep political and security divisions that continue to influence daily life across communities in Judea and Samaria.

Security Measures in Jewish Settlements

Ben-Zion stated that Israeli settlements in the area maintain extensive security systems because they remain vulnerable to attacks. According to him, Jewish communities are protected through barriers, surveillance equipment, emergency response units, and coordinated security operations.

He pointed out that nearby Palestinian villages generally do not have similar defensive infrastructure, claiming the security difference is linked to the threat perception faced by Israeli residents.

Using the example of the Jewish settlement of Leshem and the neighboring Palestinian village of Deir Ballut, he said residents from both communities often share roads and industrial zones despite ongoing tensions.

Criticism of Palestinian Leadership

During the conversation, Ben-Zion sharply criticized the Palestinian Authority, accusing it of encouraging hostility through financial payments and educational messaging. He said meaningful progress would require leadership changes and a different approach toward coexistence.

He also claimed that Israeli forces regularly conduct operations inside Palestinian towns to prevent the production and storage of weapons, explosives, and rockets.

Ben-Zion said international audiences often receive an inaccurate understanding of conditions in the region because of how events are presented in global media coverage. He encouraged observers to visit the area directly to better understand the complexities on the ground.

Concerns Over Future Security Threats

Referring to the October 7, 2023 attacks carried out by Hamas militants in southern Israel, Ben-Zion said Israeli authorities remain determined to prevent similar incidents from occurring in central parts of the country.

From the settlement of Peduel, he noted that major Israeli cities, including Tel Aviv and areas surrounding Ben Gurion Airport, are geographically close to parts of the West Bank. He argued that Israeli military deployments in the region are intended to stop armed groups from gaining operational capabilities near heavily populated areas.

According to Ben-Zion, nightly military operations and intelligence activities are considered essential by Israeli authorities to maintain security stability.

Population Growth and Long-Term Presence

Ben-Zion said approximately 700,000 Jewish residents currently live east of the Green Line in Judea and Samaria. He added that demographic growth could push the population close to one million within the next five years.

He insisted that large-scale evacuation efforts similar to Israel’s 2005 withdrawal from Gaza are unlikely to happen again, citing the significant increase in population and infrastructure in the settlements.

The Israeli official also highlighted military service among residents, saying many families in the region contribute to the country through reserve duty and national service. He mentioned his own background in the paratroopers and participation in reserve operations following the October 7 attacks.

Debate Over Palestinian Population Figures

Discussing Palestinian demographics, Ben-Zion questioned official population estimates presented by Palestinian authorities. He argued that some figures may include duplicate counts or individuals currently living abroad in neighboring Arab countries.

He claimed many Palestinians who left during previous regional conflicts continue to remain on official residency records despite no longer residing in the territory.

Historical and Strategic Arguments

Ben-Zion also stressed the historical significance of Samaria in Jewish tradition. He referenced locations such as Joseph’s Tomb in Nablus, known in biblical history as Shechem, describing them as central to Jewish historical identity and heritage.

He further linked Israel’s security approach to previous withdrawals from Lebanon and Gaza, arguing that militant organizations later gained influence in those territories. According to him, Israeli policymakers view these experiences as lessons shaping present-day strategy in Judea and Samaria.

Recent Military Incident

The remarks came shortly after the Israel Defense Forces announced that a militant accused of opening fire near a church area and killing Israeli reservist Major Itamar Sapir had been killed in a targeted airstrike.

In a statement shared on X, the IDF said the suspect was identified entering a structure near the church before the Israeli Air Force carried out the operation.

Israeli authorities stated that security operations in the region remain ongoing amid continued tensions across multiple fronts.
