Security – Israeli Airstrikes Intensify Ahead of Planned Lebanon Talks
Security – An Israeli airstrike in eastern Lebanon has left at least 12 people dead, according to Lebanese state media, as military tensions between Israel and Hezbollah continue to escalate ahead of scheduled diplomatic talks in Washington.

The strike targeted the village of Mashghara in Lebanon’s Bekaa Valley late Monday night, Lebanon’s National News Agency reported. Rescue teams spent several hours searching through collapsed buildings after the attack, recovering bodies from the debris following a series of overnight bombardments across southern and eastern parts of the country.
Israeli Military Expands Operations in Lebanon
The latest attack came shortly after Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced plans to intensify military action against Hezbollah positions in Lebanon. In a video statement released Monday, Netanyahu said Israel would increase the scale and force of its operations in response to ongoing attacks from the armed group.
Israeli military officials did not directly comment on the specific strike in Mashghara. However, the military confirmed it had been targeting what it described as Hezbollah infrastructure in eastern Lebanon. An Israeli security official, speaking anonymously under military regulations, said an additional battalion had been deployed to Lebanon as part of expanded operations.
The renewed escalation has raised concerns over a broader regional conflict as both sides continue exchanging attacks along the border.
Rising Tensions Along the Border
Hezbollah has continued firing rockets and carrying out attacks against Israeli forces in southern Lebanon and towns in northern Israel. The group says its military campaign will continue until Israeli airstrikes stop and Israeli troops withdraw from Lebanese territory.
In recent weeks, Hezbollah has claimed to be using advanced fiber-optic drones that have reportedly proven difficult for Israeli defense systems to intercept. According to statements released by the group, the drones have been used to target Israeli military positions and border communities.
Israeli authorities have also updated civilian safety guidelines in northern areas of the country. Residents have been advised to avoid large public gatherings due to the heightened security threat and ongoing cross-border attacks.
Diplomatic Talks Scheduled in Washington
The latest violence comes just days before Lebanese and Israeli military representatives are expected to meet in Washington for direct discussions aimed at reducing hostilities. The Lebanese government hopes the talks could help pave the way for a ceasefire agreement and ease tensions along the border.
However, Hezbollah has publicly opposed direct negotiations with Israel, creating uncertainty over whether diplomatic efforts will succeed in ending the conflict.
International observers have expressed growing concern over the humanitarian impact of the fighting, particularly in Lebanon, where many communities have faced repeated airstrikes and displacement.
Heavy Humanitarian Toll Continues
The ongoing conflict has forced more than one million people in Lebanon to flee their homes, according to official estimates. The fighting intensified after Hezbollah launched rockets into northern Israel on March 2, saying the attacks were carried out in support of Iran.
Lebanon’s Health Ministry says at least 3,185 people have been killed in Israeli strikes since the conflict began, while more than 9,600 others have suffered injuries. Many residential areas in southern and eastern Lebanon have sustained significant damage during the months-long fighting.
Rescue operations have continued in several affected towns, with emergency workers searching damaged buildings for survivors and victims after repeated waves of airstrikes.
Despite ongoing international calls for restraint, both Israel and Hezbollah have continued military operations, increasing fears that the conflict could widen further in the coming weeks.
