Judiciary – The Supreme Court on Monday underlined the need for a transparent and unbiased investigation into the death of model and actor Twisha Sharma, stating that the matter must be handled strictly according to legal procedures. The court described the incident as deeply unfortunate and stressed that justice should be pursued without external influence or unnecessary public pressure.
Court Emphasises Due Process
During the hearing, the apex court acknowledged that a recommendation had already been made for a Central Bureau of Investigation inquiry into the case. The bench also recorded the assurance given by the Solicitor General that a final decision regarding the transfer of the investigation to the CBI would be taken soon.
The judges observed that such sensitive matters require careful handling and should not be shaped by public narratives. The bench noted that ongoing legal proceedings must remain free from speculation and emotional commentary that could affect the course of the investigation.
Appeal to Media for Responsible Reporting
The Supreme Court made a strong appeal to media organisations to maintain restraint while covering developments related to the case. The bench specifically requested journalists and news platforms not to repeatedly approach the victim’s family or the accused’s relatives for reactions and emotional statements.
According to the court, reducing the grief of affected families into short media clips or dramatic sound bites can intensify their suffering. The judges remarked that certain actions surrounding media coverage had already caused distress and advised news outlets to avoid sensational presentation of the matter.
The court further stated that public discussions and media debates should not interfere with facts being collected by investigating authorities. It also urged journalists to avoid building narratives before the investigation reaches a lawful conclusion.
Concern Over Statements by Potential Witnesses
The bench highlighted that statements made publicly by individuals connected to the case could negatively affect the investigation. It advised both the victim’s family and the accused’s relatives to submit their accounts directly before the investigating agency rather than speaking on public platforms.
The court also warned that recording interviews of people who may later become witnesses could impact the fairness of the proceedings. Such actions, it said, might influence testimony and complicate legal findings during later stages of the investigation.
Madhya Pradesh High Court Praised
During the proceedings, the Supreme Court appreciated the Madhya Pradesh High Court for acting swiftly in ordering a second post-mortem examination in the case. The bench noted that the decision reflected prompt judicial intervention aimed at ensuring clarity in the investigation.
Counsel representing the accused also informed the court that a former judge associated with the matter would refrain from making comments to the media regarding the ongoing probe.
Solicitor General Highlights Public Attention
Appearing on behalf of the Madhya Pradesh government, the Solicitor General stated that extensive media attention had contributed to progress in the investigation. At the same time, he remarked that incidents of this nature are tragic and should encourage families and society to prioritise safety and understanding over social stigma.
The Supreme Court, however, maintained that despite public interest in the matter, the investigation should proceed independently and without outside influence.
Court Urges Public to Avoid Speculation
Before disposing of the suo motu proceedings, the bench appealed to the public to remain patient and avoid speculation about the case. The judges expressed confidence in the country’s premier investigative institutions and said the truth would emerge through a lawful and systematic inquiry.
The court concluded by reminding all parties that justice can only be ensured when investigations are conducted fairly, responsibly, and without unnecessary interference from public commentary or media pressure.
