PowerCrisis – Akhilesh Yadav Targets UP Government Over Electricity Shortages
PowerCrisis – Uttar Pradesh politics witnessed a fresh confrontation on Monday as Samajwadi Party president Akhilesh Yadav intensified his criticism of the BJP-led state government over recurring electricity disruptions and administrative handling of the power sector.

The opposition leader accused the ruling government of attempting to shift public focus away from mounting dissatisfaction caused by power cuts during the peak summer season. In a post shared on social media platform X, Yadav alleged that several BJP lawmakers were more focused on protecting their political future than addressing the concerns of residents affected by electricity shortages across the state.
Opposition Raises Questions Over Public Hardships
Yadav said uninterrupted electricity remains a major concern for households struggling through rising temperatures, particularly affecting senior citizens, children, women, and patients. He claimed the government had failed to respond adequately to complaints emerging from different districts of Uttar Pradesh.
According to the Samajwadi Party chief, the growing frustration among citizens has pushed some leaders within the ruling establishment to publicly express concerns through letters and statements. However, he alleged these actions were politically motivated and intended to safeguard electoral prospects ahead of the 2027 Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections.
He further remarked that ordinary citizens were bearing the consequences of internal disagreements within the BJP’s leadership structure. Yadav questioned why residents should suffer because of what he described as conflicts within the state’s “double-engine government” arrangement.
Cabinet Reshuffle Comes Under Opposition Scrutiny
The former chief minister also linked the recent discussions around cabinet changes to dissatisfaction within the ruling party. He suggested that the reshuffle could be used to remove ministers facing criticism over governance and administrative performance.
In his remarks, Yadav argued that some leaders who previously supported certain officials were now struggling to defend them amid public anger over electricity management. He alleged that the government was more focused on political calculations than on resolving issues related to power distribution and supply.
The Samajwadi Party leader also accused the BJP government of neglecting public demands while concentrating on political survival. He claimed dissatisfaction among voters was steadily increasing because of repeated outages and other governance-related concerns.
State Government Defends Electricity Supply Measures
Responding to criticism over the power situation, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath reiterated that ensuring uninterrupted electricity supply remains one of the state government’s top priorities.
The chief minister said he had recently reviewed the power distribution system with officials from the Energy Department, Uttar Pradesh Power Corporation, and distribution companies. He directed authorities to maintain accountability and improve responsiveness to ensure stable electricity supply for households, farmers, businesses, and industries.
Adityanath stated that the government remained committed to strengthening public trust and development through improved infrastructure and uninterrupted services across the state.
Energy Minister Highlights Record Power Supply
Meanwhile, Uttar Pradesh Energy Minister AK Sharma defended the government’s performance by pointing to record electricity supply figures achieved in recent days.
Sharing data on social media, Sharma said the state had crossed a peak electricity supply of 31,774 megawatts, describing it as the highest ever recorded in Uttar Pradesh. He also claimed the figure represented one of the highest power supply levels in the country.
According to the minister, the state government continues to work toward maintaining stable electricity distribution despite increased demand during the summer season. He added that authorities were monitoring the situation closely as consumption levels continue to rise.
Political Tensions Likely to Intensify Ahead of 2027 Polls
The latest exchange between the Samajwadi Party and the BJP signals an intensifying political battle in Uttar Pradesh ahead of the next Assembly elections. Power supply issues, governance performance, and cabinet-level decisions are expected to remain central themes in the opposition’s campaign against the ruling government.
In recent months, Yadav has repeatedly targeted the BJP administration on multiple issues, including electricity outages, infrastructure management, and administrative functioning. The BJP, on the other hand, continues to highlight development projects and infrastructure expansion as evidence of governance progress in the state.
As summer demand places additional pressure on electricity networks, the debate surrounding power supply and public services is likely to remain a key political issue in Uttar Pradesh in the coming months.
