Security – Bihar Strengthens Nepal Border Vigilance With New IG Post
Security – Bihar has moved to tighten monitoring along its international frontier by introducing a dedicated senior police position focused on border management and intelligence operations.

The Bihar government has approved the creation of an inspector general-level post dedicated to border security, aiming to improve surveillance and intelligence coordination across the state’s international and interstate boundaries. The decision was cleared during a cabinet meeting held on Wednesday under the leadership of Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary.
New Security Role Created Under Special Branch
Officials said the newly established post of Inspector General, Border, will operate under the state Special Branch and focus primarily on strengthening security arrangements along Bihar’s border with Nepal. The move is intended to improve information-sharing systems, increase monitoring activities, and support law enforcement agencies working in sensitive frontier districts.
Arvind Kumar, Additional Chief Secretary of the Cabinet Secretariat Department, stated that the new position would help intelligence units maintain closer surveillance in border regions and respond more effectively to security-related concerns.
Focus on Bihar-Nepal Border Areas
Bihar shares nearly 729 kilometers of open border with Nepal, making the region strategically important for security agencies. The latest administrative step comes shortly after a high-level review meeting chaired by Chief Secretary Pratyaya Amrit, where senior police officials and intelligence representatives assessed the situation in districts located near the Indo-Nepal border.
During that meeting, authorities discussed measures aimed at improving coordination between departments and strengthening enforcement in vulnerable areas. Officials were also instructed to clear encroachments from “No Man’s Land” zones situated along the international boundary.
Earlier Border Security Review Led by Amit Shah
The issue of border management had also gained prominence earlier this year when Union Home Minister Amit Shah visited Kishanganj district on February 24 for a comprehensive review meeting focused on frontier security. The discussions centred on improving surveillance systems and preventing unlawful activities along the India-Nepal border.
Senior officials reviewed concerns related to infiltration, smuggling of narcotics, and circulation of counterfeit currency. The meeting included Union Minister of State for Home Nityanand Rai, then Deputy Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary, Chief Secretary Pratyaya Amrit, and Director General of Police Vinay Kumar.
Top officers from the Sashastra Seema Bal, Border Security Force, and Indo-Tibetan Border Police were also present during the discussions.
Concerns Over Illegal Activities Near Border Districts
Authorities have remained concerned about illegal cross-border operations affecting districts situated near Nepal and Bangladesh-linked routes. Although Bihar does not directly share a border with Bangladesh, areas close to Kishanganj are considered sensitive because of their geographical proximity.
Security agencies have been monitoring issues including fake currency circulation, drug trafficking networks, and unauthorized movement across border regions. Officials believe that a dedicated IG-level officer can improve intelligence collection and coordination among different enforcement agencies.
Political Attention on Border Management
Border security has remained a politically important issue in Bihar, particularly after infiltration concerns surfaced during the 2025 Assembly election period. Several leaders had then called for stronger enforcement measures and tighter monitoring of border districts.
A senior police officer described the creation of the Inspector General, Border post as an important administrative step that could improve long-term border management and support ongoing security initiatives in the state.
