Diplomacy – India and Italy Expand Strategic Partnership Across Key Sectors
Diplomacy – Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni announced a major upgrade in bilateral relations during high-level discussions in Rome, marking a new phase in cooperation between the two countries across trade, defence, technology and maritime affairs.

The decision to elevate ties to a “special strategic partnership” came during Modi’s visit to Italy, which was the concluding stop of his five-nation diplomatic tour. The development reflects the increasing alignment between New Delhi and Rome as nations around the world adjust to evolving geopolitical conditions, technology competition and supply chain uncertainties.
Trade Target Set for 2029
Both governments introduced an ambitious economic goal aimed at significantly increasing bilateral trade over the next four years. India and Italy are now targeting trade worth 20 billion euros by 2029, up from the current level of 14.25 billion euros recorded in 2025.
Speaking after the delegation-level talks, Modi said the discussions covered a broad range of areas intended to strengthen long-term cooperation. He stated that the India-Italy Joint Strategic Action Plan 2025-2029 would serve as a forward-looking framework for expanding collaboration in multiple sectors.
Strong Political Engagement Between Leaders
The visit also highlighted the growing political understanding between the two leaders. Modi received a ceremonial military welcome upon his arrival in Rome. Meloni later hosted him for dinner and accompanied him during a visit to the historic Colosseum before formal meetings began.
Over recent years, both leaders have maintained regular diplomatic contact. Meloni noted that she had met Modi several times and described their interactions as developing into a sincere personal friendship alongside official engagement.
Agreements Signed Across Multiple Sectors
India and Italy signed several agreements during the visit covering important areas such as agriculture, science and technology, critical minerals, Ayurveda, ports and maritime transport.
One of the notable understandings reached between the two sides relates to the movement of Indian nurses to Italy. Officials believe the agreement could create employment opportunities for trained healthcare professionals from India while helping Italy address workforce requirements in the medical sector.
Defence Cooperation Receives Fresh Push
Defence cooperation emerged as another major focus of the talks. The two countries welcomed the India-Italy Defence Industrial Roadmap, which aims to encourage joint manufacturing and technology collaboration in defence production.
The roadmap includes cooperation in helicopters, naval systems, marine equipment and electronic warfare technologies. Officials from both nations see the initiative as an important step towards strengthening industrial partnerships and boosting defence capabilities through shared expertise.
Focus on Connectivity and Maritime Security
Apart from trade and defence, discussions also covered connectivity projects, maritime security and emerging technologies. Both countries are looking to improve coordination in the Indo-Pacific region and enhance cooperation in securing sea routes that are critical for international commerce.
The upgraded partnership is expected to deepen collaboration between Indian and Italian companies, research institutions and strategic agencies in the coming years.
India’s expanding engagement with European partners has gained momentum recently, and the latest agreement with Italy signals New Delhi’s effort to strengthen economic and strategic ties with key European nations amid changing global dynamics.
