MissingPerson – Jharkhand Man Returns Home After Family Conducted Final Rites

MissingPerson –  What began as a desperate search for a missing man in Jharkhand’s Khunti district turned into an extraordinary and emotional development after a villager returned home days after his family had already performed his funeral rites. The incident has now prompted police to launch a DNA identification process to determine the identity of the deceased person whose body was mistakenly claimed by relatives.

Missing man returns after funeral rites

Family Mistook Unidentified Body for Missing Relative

According to local police officials, 45-year-old Vishram Munda, a resident of Patratoli village in Khunti district, had gone missing on May 10. He reportedly left his home to attend a wedding ceremony but did not return, causing concern among his family members.

Relatives and villagers began searching for him in nearby areas, but no information about his whereabouts could be found. During the search operation, police recovered an unidentified body from a drain a day later. Authorities informed local residents about the discovery, following which Munda’s family arrived at Khunti Sadar Hospital for identification.

Police officials said the recovered body closely resembled Vishram Munda in terms of physical appearance, facial features, and body structure. Due to the similarities, the family believed the deceased man was their missing relative.

Last Rites Performed According to Tribal Customs

After completing legal procedures, authorities handed over the body to the family members. The relatives then conducted the funeral and burial rituals in accordance with local tribal traditions practiced in the region.

The funeral was attended by family members and villagers who mourned what they believed was the death of Vishram Munda. For several days, the family remained convinced that the missing man had died under unknown circumstances.

The unexpected development left the village in shock when the situation changed completely a few days later.

Vishram Munda Reappears Unexpectedly

In a surprising turn, Vishram Munda reportedly arrived at his daughter’s rented residence in Khunti town several days after the burial ceremony had already taken place. His sudden appearance stunned relatives and local residents who had believed he was dead.

Police officials said Munda informed his family that he had travelled to Ramgarh, located around 70 kilometres away from Khunti district, without informing anyone. His unexplained absence and lack of communication had led relatives to assume the unidentified body recovered earlier was his.

The incident quickly drew attention in the area due to the unusual sequence of events and the emotional impact on the family.

Police Begin DNA Identification Process

Sub-Divisional Police Officer Varun Rajak confirmed that authorities have now initiated further legal and forensic procedures to identify the deceased person correctly. Officials are preparing to exhume the buried body for DNA testing.

The forensic examination is expected to help police establish the identity of the unknown deceased man and clarify the circumstances surrounding his death. Authorities have not yet disclosed any information regarding possible missing person reports connected to the unidentified body.

Police officials stated that the investigation remains active and further steps will be taken based on the DNA analysis report.

Incident Raises Questions About Identification Procedures

The case has also highlighted the challenges faced by families and authorities in identifying bodies when visual similarities exist. In rural areas, relatives often rely on physical appearance for recognition, particularly when official records or scientific methods are not immediately available.

Local residents described the incident as deeply emotional for the family, which had already gone through funeral rituals before discovering that Vishram Munda was alive.

Authorities are continuing their investigation while awaiting forensic confirmation regarding the identity of the deceased individual.
