Pilgrimage – Lieutenant GovernorTaranjit Singh Sandhu on Wednesday attended the ceremonial departure of the first Jatha for the 2026 Sri Hemkund Sahib Yatra at a Gurdwara Sahib in Rishikesh, marking the beginning of the annual pilgrimage to the revered Himalayan shrine.

Hemkund sahib jatha spiritual journey

The event witnessed a large gathering of devotees who assembled to participate in the traditional see-off ceremony before beginning the challenging spiritual journey to Sri Hemkund Sahib, one of Sikhism’s most respected pilgrimage destinations located in the Uttarakhand Himalayas.

Spiritual Significance Highlighted During Ceremony

Addressing the Sangat during the ceremony, the Lieutenant-Governor described the yatra as a deeply meaningful spiritual experience that attracts devotees from across India and abroad every year. He said the pilgrimage reflects faith, devotion, and collective spiritual commitment among Sikh devotees.

Sandhu expressed gratitude for getting the opportunity to join the gathering as the first group of pilgrims prepared to depart under the guidance of the Panj Pyare. He stated that witnessing the enthusiasm and devotion of the pilgrims was a humbling experience.

The annual Hemkund Sahib Yatra is considered one of the most significant religious journeys for the Sikh community. Pilgrims travel through mountainous terrain and high-altitude routes to reach the sacred shrine, which remains open for a limited period each year because of extreme weather conditions in the region.

Personal Memories Shared With Devotees

During his interaction with pilgrims, Sandhu also recalled his personal connection with Sri Hemkund Sahib. He shared memories of visiting the holy shrine in 1975 along with his father, Bishan Singh Samundri, describing the experience as unforgettable and spiritually enriching.

His remarks drew attention from devotees attending the programme, many of whom were preparing for the demanding trek associated with the pilgrimage. The yatra is known not only for its religious importance but also for the physical endurance required to complete the mountainous journey.

The Lieutenant-Governor conveyed his wishes for the safe travel, good health, and spiritual fulfilment of all pilgrims undertaking the yatra this year. Officials and organisers at the ceremony also coordinated arrangements for the departing devotees to ensure smooth travel during the initial phase of the pilgrimage.

Devotees Begin Sacred Journey From Rishikesh

The flag-off ceremony at the Gurdwara Sahib in Rishikesh carried a strong atmosphere of devotion as pilgrims gathered with prayers and religious chants before beginning the journey. Families and supporters were also present to bid farewell to the devotees participating in the first Jatha.

Later, Sandhu shared photographs from the event on social media platform X, where he praised the faith and energy displayed by the Sangat. He noted that the spiritual spirit visible during the ceremony reflected the importance of the pilgrimage for the Sikh community worldwide.

The Hemkund Sahib Yatra attracts thousands of pilgrims every year and plays a major role in Uttarakhand’s religious tourism activities during the pilgrimage season. Authorities and local administrations typically make extensive arrangements related to transportation, accommodation, health services, and safety measures to support devotees travelling to the shrine.

As the first group of pilgrims set out from Rishikesh, the annual yatra officially commenced with prayers, blessings, and hopes for a peaceful and successful pilgrimage season in the Himalayan region.
