Rajiv Gandhi’s Political Journey

Rajiv Gandhi became Prime Minister in October 1984 after the assassination of his mother and former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. At the age of 40, he became the youngest person to hold the office of Prime Minister in India.

During his tenure, Rajiv Gandhi focused on administrative reforms, telecommunications, education, and technology-driven development. His government is often credited with encouraging the early expansion of the computer and telecom sectors in India.

Born on August 20, 1944, Rajiv Gandhi remained active in national politics until his assassination on May 21, 1991. He was killed in a suicide bomb attack carried out by an LTTE operative during an election campaign rally in Sriperumbudur, Tamil Nadu.

Even decades after his death, Rajiv Gandhi continues to be remembered by Congress leaders and supporters for his emphasis on modernization, democratic values, and opportunities for India’s younger generation.
