Diplomacy – Prime Minister Narendra Modi received a ceremonial welcome in Rome on Wednesday before holding high-level discussions with Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni on strengthening cooperation between the two countries and addressing key international developments.

The bilateral meeting took place at Villa Pamphili, where both leaders reviewed ongoing collaboration and explored new opportunities in trade, technology, security, and investment. Senior Indian officials, including External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar and National Security Adviser Ajit Doval, attended the delegation-level talks alongside representatives from the Italian side.
Ceremonial Welcome Marks Official Engagements
Before the formal discussions began, Prime Minister Narendra Modi was welcomed with military honours in Rome. The Indian and Italian leaders greeted each other warmly, reflecting the growing diplomatic engagement between the two nations over the past few years.
Following the official talks, both sides were expected to participate in a working lunch attended by leading industrial and business representatives from India and Italy. The interaction aimed to encourage deeper cooperation between companies operating in sectors such as manufacturing, innovation, infrastructure, and energy.
Focus on Trade, Technology and Emerging Sectors
Earlier on Wednesday, Prime Minister Modi also met Italian President Sergio Mattarella to discuss broader aspects of bilateral relations. According to statements shared by the Indian side, the conversation included topics related to trade expansion, investment opportunities, cultural exchanges, and collaboration in advanced technologies.
The discussions also covered future cooperation in artificial intelligence, critical minerals, outer space programmes, and nuclear energy. These sectors are increasingly becoming central to India and Italy’s strategic partnership as both countries seek stronger economic and technological ties.
In a message shared on social media platform X, PM Modi highlighted the importance of continued cooperation between New Delhi and Rome in areas shaping the global economy and innovation landscape.
Modi and Meloni Continue Diplomatic Engagement
Prime Minister Modi arrived in Italy on Tuesday night as part of the final phase of his five-nation foreign visit. Soon after reaching Rome, he attended a dinner hosted by Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni.
The two leaders later visited the historic Colosseum, one of Italy’s most recognised landmarks. During the informal interaction, they exchanged views on a range of global and regional issues while reaffirming their commitment to closer India-Italy cooperation.
Sharing details from the meeting, PM Modi said the discussions would help further strengthen the friendship and strategic understanding between the two countries.
Prime Minister Meloni also publicly welcomed the Indian leader upon his arrival in Rome, underlining the warm diplomatic ties currently shared by both governments.
India-Italy Partnership Gains Momentum
India and Italy have significantly expanded cooperation in recent years across areas including clean energy, defence, technology, and economic development. Officials from both countries view the current visit as an opportunity to accelerate ongoing initiatives and deepen long-term strategic engagement.
India’s Ministry of External Affairs stated that the visit is expected to provide fresh momentum to bilateral relations and open new avenues for cooperation. MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal described the partnership as longstanding and multifaceted, highlighting its growing importance in the present geopolitical environment.
Prime Minister Modi is also scheduled to visit the Food and Agriculture Organization before concluding his Italy visit.
The Indian Prime Minister had previously travelled to Italy in June 2024 to participate in the G7 Summit 2024, where he engaged with global leaders on international economic and strategic issues.
