Weather Update – Tamil Nadu Rain Brings Relief After Intense Summer Heat
Weather Update – After several days of scorching temperatures, widespread rain across parts of Tamil Nadu and Puducherry brought welcome relief to residents struggling with harsh summer conditions.

Heavy showers lashed multiple neighbourhoods in Chennai on Wednesday evening, significantly lowering temperatures after an extremely hot day. Areas such as Nungambakkam, Kodambakkam, Vadapalani, Koyambedu and Saidapet experienced moderate rainfall, leading to cooler weather and pleasant conditions across the city.
Rainfall Changes Evening Conditions in Chennai
The sudden weather shift was noticeable across both central and suburban parts of Chennai. Commuters travelling during peak evening hours in localities including Kelambakkam, Padur and Thiruporur were caught off guard as rain intensified in several stretches. Despite minor inconvenience to motorists, many residents welcomed the showers after enduring prolonged humidity and rising daytime temperatures.
The rainfall also affected nearby Tiruvallur district, where places such as Thirupachur, Pandur, Kuppammal Chathiram, Siruvanur and Pullarambakkam recorded fresh spells of rain during the evening.
Waterlogging Reported on Key Roads
The sudden downpour caused temporary water accumulation in some low-lying stretches along the Chennai-Tirupati highway. Traffic movement slowed briefly in a few areas as vehicles navigated waterlogged roads.
In Chengalpattu district, widespread rainfall was recorded in locations including Singaperumal Koil, Maraimalai Nagar, Thiruporur and Thirukazhukundram. Residents in these regions reported cooler temperatures and cloudy weather following the showers.
Similar conditions were witnessed in Krishnagiri district, where the weather changed rapidly from intense daytime heat to cooler evening temperatures. Areas such as Kaveripattinam, Bargur, Allapatti and Kundarapalli received rainfall accompanied by gusty winds in some places.
Puducherry Witnesses Thunderstorms
Several parts of Puducherry also experienced rain along with thunder and lightning activity for nearly thirty minutes. Localities including Lawspet, Muthialpet, Uzhavarkarai, Korimedu, Bahour, Usudu, Mannadipet and Thirukanur recorded steady rainfall during the evening hours.
Residents said the showers provided much-needed relief from uncomfortable heat conditions that had persisted throughout the week. However, officials advised motorists and pedestrians to remain cautious during sudden thunderstorms and reduced visibility on roads.
IMD Predicts Heavy Rain in Western Districts
The India Meteorological Department has forecast heavy rainfall in five districts of Tamil Nadu over the next two days. Coimbatore, Nilgiris, Theni, Erode and Dindigul are expected to receive intense showers due to active weather systems over the region.
According to meteorologists, an upper-air cyclonic circulation remains positioned over south coastal Andhra Pradesh and adjoining areas. In addition, a trough extending from the Lakshadweep region towards south coastal Andhra Pradesh is influencing weather activity across southern states.
Experts believe these atmospheric conditions are likely to trigger further rainfall, particularly in western Tamil Nadu and nearby hilly districts.
Heat Persists in Several Areas
Despite rainfall in many regions, high temperatures continued in some districts. Tiruttani recorded the highest temperature at nearly 40 degrees Celsius. Other places, including Chennai Meenambakkam, Nungambakkam, Vellore, Erode, Madurai Airport and Tiruchy, also experienced intense daytime heat.
The weather department stated that Chennai is expected to continue witnessing partly cloudy skies along with hot and humid conditions over the coming days, although isolated rain activity may continue in certain parts of the city.
