DefenceTies – India’s Defense Minister Rajnath Singh on Monday commenced an official visit to Vietnam and South Korea, with discussions expected to focus on expanding military cooperation, defense production partnerships, and maritime security coordination across the Indo-Pacific region.
In a message shared before his departure, Singh stated that the visit would help broaden India’s engagement with both countries and strengthen long-term strategic relations. He said the meetings would concentrate on improving military collaboration, increasing defence industry cooperation and enhancing maritime coordination aimed at supporting peace and stability in the Indo-Pacific.
India and Vietnam Push Forward Defence Engagement
The visit comes shortly after high-level talks between India and Vietnam during Vietnamese President To Lam’s state visit to India earlier this month. During those discussions, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Lam reiterated that defence and security ties remain one of the most significant pillars of the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership shared by the two nations.
Both sides agreed to expand cooperation in traditional defence sectors while also exploring collaboration in emerging technologies and advanced military systems. The two countries also discussed increasing procurement of defence equipment and strengthening industrial cooperation.
According to the joint understanding reached during the visit, India and Vietnam are expected to intensify cooperation in several areas, including joint military exercises, defence policy coordination, naval engagement, peacekeeping operations and information sharing.
Maritime Cooperation in Indo-Pacific Region
Maritime security remained a central focus of the bilateral discussions between the two countries. India and Vietnam plan to strengthen coordination in areas such as hydrography, maritime safety and search-and-rescue operations, while also encouraging more naval port visits and military exchanges.
The two nations additionally agreed to support collaboration in defence research, co-development of technologies and capacity-building initiatives. Officials from both countries believe these efforts will contribute to maintaining stability and security across the wider Indo-Pacific region.
India’s existing defence credit assistance to Vietnam was also reviewed during earlier talks. Leaders from both nations acknowledged that these credit arrangements have supported Vietnam’s defence preparedness and further strengthened bilateral defence relations.
Existing Agreements Reviewed During Talks
The two countries also expressed satisfaction over the implementation of several defence-related agreements already signed between them. These include the Mutual Logistics Support Agreement and cooperation frameworks linked to submarine search and rescue operations.
Another area receiving attention is defence manufacturing cooperation, with both governments indicating interest in expanding industrial partnerships in the coming years.
Officials familiar with the discussions said the overall objective is to deepen strategic trust while increasing practical cooperation across multiple security sectors.
India and South Korea Expand Strategic Partnership
Alongside Vietnam, Singh’s visit to South Korea is also expected to focus on strengthening strategic coordination and defence cooperation between New Delhi and Seoul.
In recent discussions held between Indian and South Korean leadership, both countries agreed to enhance cooperation in defence industries, emerging technologies, economic security and supply chain resilience.
The two sides also reaffirmed their support for a free, open and rules-based Indo-Pacific region, underlining the importance of regional stability and international cooperation.
South Korean President Lee’s recent visit to India marked the first presidential-level visit from the Republic of Korea in nearly eight years, signalling renewed momentum in bilateral relations.
Focus on Emerging Security Challenges
India and South Korea have also agreed to improve coordination on global and regional strategic developments through structured institutional dialogue mechanisms.
Planned initiatives include expanded defence industry consultations and a proposed 2+2 dialogue involving senior foreign affairs and defence officials from both countries.
The two governments further announced plans to establish an Economic Security Dialogue that will focus on strengthening supply chains, encouraging diversification and promoting cooperation in critical and emerging technologies.
Observers believe Rajnath Singh’s ongoing visit reflects India’s broader effort to reinforce strategic partnerships in Asia while enhancing defence and maritime cooperation with key regional partners.
