Investigation – Brazil’s Supreme Federal Court has launched an investigation into allegations that parliamentary budget allocations may have been redirected to support cultural and audiovisual projects connected to former President Jair Bolsonaro. The inquiry focuses on whether public money was improperly used to finance political image-building activities, including a planned feature film based on Bolsonaro’s life and political journey.
Court Opens Inquiry Into Budget Allocation Claims
The order for the investigation was issued on Friday by Justice Flavio Dino after a formal complaint was submitted earlier this year by federal lawmaker Tabata Amaral of the Brazilian Socialist Party. Amaral argued that funds distributed through parliamentary amendments may have been diverted from their intended public purposes and used to back productions with political objectives.
According to the complaint, several legislators linked to Bolsonaro’s Liberal Party allegedly transferred around 2.6 million reais in parliamentary resources. Authorities are now examining whether those funds were connected to media or cultural initiatives designed to benefit Bolsonaro or his political allies.
Brazilian prosecutors and investigators are expected to review financial records, public spending documents, and possible links between lawmakers and organizations involved in audiovisual projects. The case is currently under judicial secrecy while evidence continues to be collected.
Film Project Draws National Attention
The investigation gained wider attention following reports involving Senator Flavio Bolsonaro, the former president’s son. Media outlets in Brazil recently reported that the senator allegedly sought nearly 130 million reais from a private banker who is currently imprisoned on fraud-related accusations.
The money was reportedly intended to support a film project titled “Dark Horse,” a production said to portray Bolsonaro’s personal and political career. While officials have not confirmed whether public funds directly reached the project, authorities are examining whether any parliamentary resources were indirectly connected to the proposed financing structure.
Legal experts in Brazil say the investigation could raise broader questions about how parliamentary amendment funds are monitored and whether stricter oversight mechanisms are needed for projects involving political figures or election-related publicity.
Judicial Scrutiny Surrounding Bolsonaro Continues
The latest inquiry comes as Bolsonaro and his allies continue facing increasing legal pressure from Brazil’s highest court. Over the past year, several investigations and rulings have centered on the former president’s actions following the 2022 election.
Earlier this month, the Supreme Federal Court temporarily suspended legislation that could have reduced prison sentences for individuals convicted over the January 8, 2023 attacks on government institutions in Brasília. The attacks targeted key government buildings shortly after Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva returned to the presidency.
Justice Alexandre de Moraes, who is overseeing the constitutional review of that law, stated that suspending the measure was necessary to preserve legal certainty while the court evaluates whether the legislation complies with Brazil’s constitution.
Bolsonaro Serving Prison Sentence
Bolsonaro was sentenced by the Supreme Federal Court in September last year to 27 years and three months in prison after being convicted for leading an attempted coup plot. The ruling marked one of the most significant political judgments in Brazil’s recent democratic history.
The former president has denied wrongdoing, while his supporters continue to criticize the court’s handling of the investigations. However, judicial authorities maintain that all proceedings are being conducted under constitutional procedures and legal standards.
As the latest investigation moves forward, Brazilian authorities are expected to determine whether public money was unlawfully used to support political media campaigns or cultural productions linked to Bolsonaro and his political network.
