Maharashtra politics witnessed another confrontation on Wednesday after Congress MP Varsha Gaikwad accused Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis of violating environmental compliance norms during a public motorcycle ride to Vidhan Bhavan in Mumbai. The controversy emerged after Fadnavis travelled from his official Malabar Hill residence to the state legislature complex at Nariman Point on a black Royal Enfield Classic motorcycle, accompanied by state minister Ashish Shelar.
Questions Raised Over Pollution Certificate
Soon after visuals of the ride appeared online, Gaikwad alleged that the motorcycle used by the Chief Minister was operating with an expired Pollution Under Control certificate. According to the Congress MP, the pollution document linked to the vehicle had reportedly expired on January 10, 2025.
Sharing screenshots and vehicle-related details on social media platform X, Gaikwad questioned whether traffic authorities and the Regional Transport Office would take action if the claims were verified. She also criticised what she described as selective enforcement of transport regulations, suggesting that ordinary citizens would face penalties for similar violations.
Her remarks quickly gained attention online as political supporters from both parties exchanged reactions over the issue.
Motorcycle Ride Linked to Fuel Conservation Campaign
The motorcycle journey was reportedly intended to support Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s appeal for fuel conservation and environmentally responsible travel habits. The symbolic ride was presented as part of broader efforts to encourage reduced fuel consumption and create awareness around sustainable commuting methods.
Photographs and videos from the event showed both Fadnavis and Shelar arriving at the Vidhan Bhavan premises wearing green helmets. The images circulated widely across digital platforms throughout the day, drawing mixed reactions from the public and political observers.
The Chief Minister has repeatedly spoken in recent months about the importance of reducing fuel dependency amid fluctuating global energy prices and economic pressures. Government representatives have also promoted smaller measures aimed at encouraging responsible energy use.
Opposition Calls Ride a Publicity Exercise
Gaikwad, however, dismissed the event as a symbolic exercise with limited practical value. She argued that replacing a convoy of cars with motorcycles would not significantly contribute to fuel savings or environmental improvement.
The Congress MP stated that the Chief Minister could have delivered a stronger message by choosing public transport instead. According to her, travelling by a BEST bus and walking a short distance to the legislature building would have demonstrated a more genuine commitment to austerity and sustainable urban transport.
She further claimed that the motorcycle ride appeared designed more for public visibility than for promoting meaningful policy action.
Concerns Over Mumbai’s Public Transport System
During her criticism, Gaikwad also highlighted broader concerns regarding Mumbai’s transport infrastructure. She accused the Maharashtra government of failing to adequately strengthen BEST bus services despite increasing pressure on daily commuters.
According to the Congress leader, many residents continue to face overcrowded buses, shrinking fleet numbers, and safety concerns while using public transport across the city. She argued that improving affordable mass transit systems would have a greater long-term impact on fuel conservation and environmental goals than isolated symbolic events.
The debate added another political dimension to ongoing discussions surrounding urban mobility, environmental responsibility, and public infrastructure in Maharashtra.
As of Wednesday evening, there was no official response from the Chief Minister’s office regarding the allegations linked to the motorcycle’s pollution certification. However, the incident continued to dominate political conversations on social media and among party leaders.
