TrafficManagement – Delhi Launches Large-Scale Drive to Reduce Congestion and Improve Road Safety
TrafficManagement – Delhi is moving ahead with an extensive traffic improvement plan as authorities intensify efforts to reduce congestion, strengthen road safety measures and modernise the city’s transport management system.

Delhi Identifies Key Congestion Zones
The Delhi Traffic Police has identified 62 major traffic bottlenecks across the national capital as part of a wider strategy to improve vehicle movement and reduce daily commuting delays. Officials have also initiated more than 160 infrastructure-related interventions aimed at streamlining traffic flow and enhancing road safety standards across busy routes and intersections.
The review took place during a high-level meeting chaired by Lieutenant Governor Taranjit Singh Sandhu on Wednesday, where senior Delhi Police officers discussed ongoing traffic management projects and future action plans.
Focus on Illegal Driving Practices
During the meeting, the Lieutenant Governor highlighted the growing concern over wrong-side driving, illegal parking and the unauthorised movement of heavy vehicles in restricted areas. He instructed officials to address these issues through a coordinated campaign combining stricter enforcement with large-scale public awareness initiatives.
According to officials, these violations have been contributing significantly to traffic congestion and safety risks in several parts of the city. Authorities are now planning targeted monitoring and enforcement drives to improve compliance with traffic regulations.
Technology-Based Traffic Monitoring Expanded
Delhi authorities are increasingly relying on technology-driven systems to strengthen traffic management operations. The Lieutenant Governor said the Integrated Traffic Management System (ITMS) is being used to support AI-based monitoring and improve real-time traffic regulation across the city.
Officials stated that the system is helping traffic police track congestion patterns, manage signals more efficiently and respond faster to violations. Authorities are also collecting citizen feedback under Project SANGAM, an initiative intended to involve residents in identifying traffic-related concerns and improving urban mobility planning.
In a post shared on social media platform X after the meeting, Sandhu said the government’s objective is to develop a transparent, seamless and modern transport network aligned with the broader national infrastructure vision and the Gati Shakti initiative.
Push for Better Coordination Between Agencies
The Lieutenant Governor stressed the importance of coordination between multiple civic and enforcement agencies to ensure long-term traffic improvements. Officials believe integrated planning and timely infrastructure upgrades are necessary to support Delhi’s growing transportation demands.
Sandhu noted that a combination of technology adoption, enforcement measures and inter-agency collaboration would play an important role in building a safer and more efficient urban transport system for residents.
The administration has also appealed to citizens to cooperate with traffic authorities and follow road safety norms to help improve commuting conditions across the capital.
Review of Waterlogging and Desilting Measures
Apart from traffic management, the Lieutenant Governor also reviewed the Delhi Development Authority’s desilting action plan for 2026 and preparedness measures to tackle waterlogging during the upcoming monsoon season.
Officials assessed work progress in six areas and 11 locations considered vulnerable to flooding and drainage issues. Sandhu directed concerned departments to complete all ongoing work by June 15 and warned against delays or compromises in construction quality.
The administration is aiming to minimise waterlogging problems that often disrupt traffic movement and daily life in several parts of Delhi during heavy rainfall.
