RabiesVaccine – The Municipal Corporation of Delhi is preparing to strengthen anti-rabies healthcare services by procuring nearly 1.2 lakh vaccine vials over the next two years. Officials said the move is aimed at ensuring a steady supply of vaccines for people affected by dog bites and other animal-related injuries across the capital.
Tender Issued for Vaccine Procurement
According to civic officials, the MCD has already issued a tender through its hospital administration department for the purchase of anti-rabies vaccines. The procurement is expected to cost around Rs 2.52 crore under a two-year rate agreement. The tender specifically mentions the supply of 1 ml anti-rabies vaccine vials to support treatment facilities functioning under the corporation’s healthcare system.
Authorities believe the large-scale purchase will help avoid shortages and improve emergency response capacity at government-run medical units handling animal-bite cases.
Vaccines to Reach Hundreds of Health Facilities
Officials stated that the vaccines will be supplied to more than 280 medical units operated by the MCD throughout Delhi. These include hospitals, dispensaries, maternity centres and mobile healthcare units that cater to residents in different parts of the city.
In addition to general healthcare centres, the civic body also manages over 25 specialised anti-rabies vaccination centres under its public health department. These dedicated facilities play a crucial role in providing immediate medical care to victims of dog bites and other suspected rabies exposures.
The corporation has been working to improve accessibility to anti-rabies treatment, particularly in densely populated areas where stray dog incidents are more frequently reported.
Rising Dog-Bite Cases Raise Public Health Concerns
Civic authorities estimate that Delhi witnessed between 60,000 and 70,000 dog-bite incidents during 2025. The high number of reported cases has increased pressure on public health infrastructure and intensified discussions around stray animal management in the national capital.
Officials said the demand for anti-rabies vaccines continues to remain significant, making uninterrupted stock availability an important part of the city’s healthcare planning. The latest procurement initiative is being viewed as part of a broader strategy to strengthen preventive healthcare measures and improve treatment response for animal-bite victims.
Focus on Stray Dog Management Measures
Apart from vaccine distribution, the MCD has also expanded efforts linked to stray dog control and monitoring. Data shared by officials shows that the corporation currently operates at least 20 animal birth control centres in locations including Dwarka, Bijwasan and Rohini.
These centres are involved in sterilisation and vaccination programmes aimed at managing the stray dog population and reducing the risk of rabies transmission. In its 2026-27 budget, the civic body allocated nearly Rs 35 crore for microchipping and vaccination drives targeting stray dogs across Delhi.
Officials said the measures are intended to improve identification and monitoring of animals while supporting long-term population control efforts.
Shelter Facility Planned in Dwarka
The corporation is also developing a new shelter facility in Dwarka to house aggressive stray dogs. Authorities said the shelter is expected to initially accommodate around 1,500 animals once operational.
The proposed facility is part of wider efforts to address safety concerns linked to repeated dog attacks in residential areas. Officials added that the shelter, combined with vaccination and sterilisation campaigns, is expected to contribute to better public safety management in the coming years.
