Politics – Kejriwal Claims Bengal Poll Outcome Was Manipulated, Targets BJP
Politics – Arvind Kejriwal, the national convenor of the Aam Aadmi Party and former Delhi chief minister, on Tuesday accused the Bharatiya Janata Party of undermining democratic processes, alleging that the outcome of the West Bengal elections was influenced through unfair means. He further stated that Punjab would play a decisive role in halting what he described as the BJP’s growing political momentum.

Allegations of Electoral Manipulation
Speaking at a gathering of party leaders, Kejriwal claimed that the BJP secured its sweeping performance in West Bengal through manipulation of the electoral system. According to him, such actions have weakened democratic institutions. He argued that similar tactics were previously used in Delhi, including the removal of voter names in his own constituency.
Kejriwal maintained that these developments signal a broader threat to the democratic framework. He pointed out that while the BJP enjoyed widespread public support during the 2014 general elections, its performance in the Delhi Assembly polls the following year was significantly weaker, which he suggested reflected genuine voter sentiment at the time.
Warning Over Punjab Elections
Turning his focus to Punjab, Kejriwal cautioned that the state’s future could be at risk if the BJP gains power there. He expressed confidence that voters in Punjab would resist such a shift, emphasizing that the state has historically played a strong role in defending its political and cultural identity.
He also suggested that the upcoming Punjab Assembly elections could prove to be a turning point in national politics. According to Kejriwal, the results in Punjab may influence the broader political landscape and challenge the current central leadership.
Support for Punjab Government Highlighted
Kejriwal highlighted what he described as a favorable public response to the work of the Punjab government led by his party. He stated that feedback from villages across the state indicates satisfaction with governance and development efforts. This, he argued, reflects a positive sentiment toward the current administration.
The AAP leader emphasized that sustained public support would be critical in the upcoming elections, framing Punjab as a key battleground where voters’ decisions could have implications beyond the state.
Concerns Over Party Switching
Addressing the issue of elected representatives changing political allegiance, Kejriwal criticized the recent move by several Members of Parliament from Punjab who joined the BJP. He claimed that these seats represent the people of Punjab and should remain aligned with their interests.
Kejriwal urged party workers and citizens to remain vigilant and actively participate in safeguarding what he described as the state’s political voice. He drew a parallel between historical resistance to external challenges and the current political situation, stating that the responsibility now lies within the state itself.
Meetings and Political Developments
Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, who was present alongside Kejriwal at a meeting with party legislators at Kapurthala House, also took steps earlier in the day to address the issue at the national level. Mann met President Droupadi Murmu at Rashtrapati Bhavan and requested action regarding Rajya Sabha members from Punjab who recently changed their party affiliation.
These developments come at a time when the BJP has expressed optimism about expanding its presence in Punjab. Party leaders have indicated confidence in achieving strong results in the 2027 Assembly elections, citing their recent electoral successes in other regions.
Political Climate Intensifies
The exchange of statements highlights the intensifying political climate ahead of future elections. While the BJP continues to project confidence, opposition leaders like Kejriwal are sharpening their criticism and mobilizing support at the state level.
As political parties prepare for upcoming contests, the focus remains on voter trust, governance performance, and the integrity of the electoral process. The developments in Punjab are likely to draw close attention, given their potential impact on the national political narrative.
