Education – A fresh political disagreement has surfaced in Delhi over the issue of private school regulation, with the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) targeting Chief Minister Rekha Gupta for what it described as delayed action. The criticism comes amid ongoing concerns from parents about rising education costs at the start of the academic session.
AAP Questions Timing of Government Action
Delhi unit chief of the Aam Aadmi Party, Saurabh Bharadwaj, stated that the government’s response arrived too late to provide meaningful relief. According to him, most families had already completed essential purchases for the new academic year by the time the Chief Minister spoke about inspecting private schools.
He explained that preparations for the school session, which begins on April 1, typically start in mid-March. During this period, parents are required to buy uniforms, textbooks, and stationery, often at high prices set by schools or affiliated vendors.
Financial Pressure on Families
Bharadwaj highlighted the burden faced by middle-class households, noting that many were compelled to spend significantly within a short timeframe. He said that by mid-April, nearly all parents had already purchased the required items, leaving little scope for corrective measures afterward.
He argued that any enforcement or inspection announced at the end of April would have minimal impact, as the primary expenses had already been incurred. According to him, this timing raises questions about the effectiveness of the proposed action.
Call for Action on Fee Hikes
The AAP leader emphasized that the core issue lies in the rising fees charged by private schools. He pointed out that fee increases continue without sufficient oversight, placing additional strain on families. Bharadwaj urged the government to address this aspect directly if it intends to provide relief.
He stated that focusing on inspections alone may not resolve the broader concerns unless accompanied by concrete steps to regulate fee structures. In his view, controlling arbitrary hikes would offer more tangible benefits to parents.
