AirQuality – Delhi Plans Real-Time Pollution Tracking With Scientific Study

AirQuality – Delhi is preparing to strengthen its fight against air pollution with a new scientific initiative aimed at improving how emission sources are identified and managed. On Wednesday, Environment Minister Manjinder Singh Sirsa instructed officials to speed up the implementation of a real-time source apportionment study, according to an official statement.

Focus on Scientific Monitoring of Pollutants

The proposed study will be conducted under the leadership of IIT Delhi and is expected to bring continuous tracking of air pollutants across the capital. Its primary focus will be on particulate matter, particularly PM10, which is known to have serious health impacts. By closely monitoring pollutant levels and their origins, authorities aim to build a clearer understanding of how different sources contribute to Delhi’s deteriorating air quality.

Experts involved in the project believe that such detailed, real-time data will help policymakers move beyond broad assumptions and adopt targeted measures. Instead of relying on seasonal or generalized responses, the study is expected to support more precise and timely decisions.

Roadmap Presented at High-Level Meeting

The plan was formally presented during a high-level meeting chaired by the environment minister. A team of scientists from IIT Delhi outlined a structured approach that combines advanced monitoring technology with data-driven analysis. Officials present at the meeting said the roadmap focuses on creating a stronger, science-backed framework for managing air pollution in the city.

The presentation highlighted the need for continuous data collection rather than periodic assessments. According to experts, real-time analysis can reveal changing pollution patterns influenced by weather conditions, traffic density, construction activity, and industrial emissions. Such insights could help authorities respond more effectively to emerging pollution spikes.

Delayed Proposal Gets Fresh Momentum

Officials indicated that the proposal had been under consideration during the previous administration but did not move forward at the time. It was later set aside without implementation. The current push by the environment ministry signals a renewed effort to revive and execute the project without further delay.

The decision to fast-track the study reflects growing concern over the capital’s persistent air quality challenges. Delhi frequently records high levels of particulate pollution, particularly during certain months, making it one of the most closely monitored cities in terms of air quality.

Expected Impact on Policy Decisions

Once operational, the study is expected to provide a continuous stream of reliable data that can guide both short-term interventions and long-term planning. Policymakers may use the findings to design strategies that address specific pollution sources, whether they are linked to transportation, construction, industrial activity, or external factors such as crop residue burning.
