Accident – A powerful explosion at a licensed firecracker manufacturing unit in Tamil Nadu’s Virudhunagar district has claimed 25 lives, making it one of the deadliest such incidents in recent times. The blast occurred on Sunday at a facility in Kattanarpatti village, leaving dozens injured and several families in mourning.

Explosion Tears Through Factory Premises

Authorities said the incident took place at the Vanaja Firecracker Factory, which was operating with valid permissions issued by the Revenue Divisional Officer. At the time of the explosion, more than 30 workers were reportedly engaged in routine production work inside the premises.

Preliminary findings suggest that friction during the handling of chemicals triggered the blast, causing highly flammable materials to ignite instantly. The resulting explosion was so intense that at least four sections of the factory were completely reduced to rubble. Residents in nearby areas reported hearing the sound from several kilometres away, indicating the scale of the impact.

Casualties Rise as Injured Succumb

Emergency responders initially recovered 23 severely burnt bodies from the site on Sunday. However, the death toll increased to 25 after two injured women, identified as Panchavarnam and Pechiammal, died while undergoing treatment at the Virudhunagar Government Medical College Hospital on Monday morning.

More than a dozen injured individuals are still receiving medical care, with some reported to be in critical condition. Doctors continue to monitor their progress closely.

Police Register Case, Owners Missing

Following a complaint filed by the factory’s administrative officer, Vanitha, the local Vachakarapatti police have registered a case against the operators of the unit, Easwari and her husband Muthumanickam. The case includes multiple legal sections related to negligence and safety violations.

Police officials confirmed that four special teams have been formed to trace the couple, who are currently absconding. Efforts are underway to locate them and determine their role in the incident.

Identification Process and Family Demands

Out of the 25 victims, authorities have successfully identified 21 bodies so far. Post-mortem examinations have been completed for these individuals, while the identification of the remaining victims is still in progress.

Meanwhile, tension has emerged at the site and hospital premises, as relatives of the deceased have refused to accept the bodies. Families have demanded that the compensation promised by the factory management—reported to be Rs 5 lakh—be provided through demand drafts instead of cheques. They insist this would ensure immediate and secure financial support.

Security Tightened in Aftermath

In response to the situation, more than 50 police personnel have been deployed in and around the affected area to maintain order and prevent any escalation. Officials are also coordinating with local authorities to manage the situation sensitively, given the emotional distress among the victims’ families.

The incident has once again brought attention to safety standards in firecracker manufacturing units, particularly in regions like Virudhunagar, which is known for such industries. Investigations are ongoing to determine whether safety norms were adequately followed and to identify lapses that may have contributed to the tragedy.
